What does the outside of the garage look like? Is it a jungle? Is it a wrecking yard? Have wood and other stuff piled up along side it? If any of those, clear it out as thats shelter and potential food source. If there are bushes etc around, boot them or at least prune them up off the ground by 18" at least. No place for them to hide makes it easier for them to get picked off by predators.

OK I keep mouse poison out in my detached garage all year and have not had a problem before, but this year when I pulled off the car cover to get the car ready for a show, a mouse ran across my feet when I started the car and it smelled like urine inside. So I pulled the back seat and it had a mouse nest under the back seat. cleaned it out vacuumed and sprayed Ozium air fresher and throwed a couple car air fresherners under the seat before putting it back in. I got to the car show and while sitting in the street another mouse bailed out, friends thought it was hilarous. My car still has a wiff of mouse urine, if anybody else had this issue what is the best way to get the smell out?

Ohhhhhhh & ByTheWay , some detail shops / cleaners have the Ozone type cleaner/ treatment you can use to eliminate odors .
Ask the limo guys how to remove puke stank
From drunk tourists …..& charges em a $250.00 fee to do the cleanup!

Just realized that I am EXTREMELY LATE to the party. Remcharger had everything pegged months ago.
Our LL1 car sat in the same storage every winter from 1996 until we sold it to get this car in 2004. Never a mouse in it.
This car had one mouse nest in the trunk once.
If there’s a dime sized hole (Canadian or USA) the will get in.

I put what I call a " Trap Line " out. simple traps in the shop and carports. I have about 7.

I catch anywhere from 1 to 3 a week. But the key is you need to be able to check the trap line daily.

I found out that the poison bait makes them go out to find water then they return and die in the nest. Peanut butter works the best.

I had a problem with this a couple years ago. I’ve been doing the peppermint/dryer sheets thing and it seems to be working .but
Thinking back , I remembered around the time that the problem started , I noticed I didn’t see my neighbors outdoor cats around. I would see carcasses of rabbits and squirrels back when they were around. They have some new cats roaming the area now and I haven’t seen any evidence of the rodents since.
I know one of the questions was getting rid of the odor, that’s a tough one. One of the hardest odors to eliminate I found.

It's a carport and compressor shed .... have not had a mouse problem going on 10 years. "Looking at that garage" There no pictures of my shop or garage?
