Hi All,

I've got a alloy headed 440, hughs whiplash cam, dougs 452 headers, twin 3" with no H or X with 2x center/offset 14" summit turbo mufflers.

Sounds beautiful... But loud as a jet. I'm gonna piss off the neighbors eventually and the misses and boy have both commented on how loud it is. So the writing is on the wall, I need to tone her down a lil. And to be honest maybe I'd like it a lil quiter too!

I'm pretty happy with the way it sounds, I haven't driven it long enough to comment on drone, but it has a good mix of thump and rasp.

Should I look at some hotdogs near the tank (68 'Net) or look at swapping the mufflers?

I was thinking if I change the mufflers, warlocks although that won't give me much more physical muffler size, reports are that they flow well both ways and the pull the sound down pretty good. Or 16" dynomax or summit super turbos - same as I have but with some more size., maybe throw some hotdogs in as well. Or maybe some cherry bomb vortex's - don't mind their sound even though it's different to what I have.

I can get some straight through glasspack mufflers in 16x10x4 locally, which I know will cut the sound down, but I don't want to end up with more of a dull lump that's a bit more of a modern v8 sound.

Also looking for performance, but willing to sac a small amount for the right sound and db level - as you can tell by the lack of H or X, just makes it angrier sounding!

Thanks for the help!

What ever you go with add these for the hooligan in your engine:

Jones/Ap max flows, kinda noisy at idle and wot, but sounds pretty tame at normal driving rpms

I have a 3" H pipe that transitions to 2.5" and dumps before the axle. I put 14" case on, but they make a 19" case that is quieter if you wanted to run longer pipe

Thanks Aldal, I did read through that a few days ago which is what got me thinking about sticking with the superturbo style. Only down side is that 17749 muffler is 20" long. I have room for maybe 16" MAX without major work to the pipes. Trying to avoid that for the moment, looking to just slip something it.

There are also some flow and noise numbers kicking around that show the warlock putting some good sound levels out while closed and flowing the most when open. Another reason I was looking there.

Also should say I'm not looking for stock sound, I still want it to sound intimidating, just not so loud!

Banzaii, how do you find the dif dumps? Do you get much fumes in the cabin? With a full exhaust I feel like it gets too much fumes at the moment so I was going to Stick away from that... Tightens up the slips a few times now, much have to look a lap bands instead

I would add a H pipe first - it will quieten it down for little $$. If it's still too loud, add resonators.

MagnaFlow mufflers with "X" pipe will sound great and keep your neighbors happy.

H pipe will cost me a new tank of gas for the welder, which is basically two
Mufflers anyway! So may as well swap the mufflers over and try and keep the extra rumble from the individual pipes... That's my theory any how.

Magnaflows are that big glass packed style that pull a lot of the rasp out, which is what i was hoping to avoid if possible.

Q T P's, followed by Dynomax superturbos.

Doing some youtube research and I came across this:

Basically the same setup I have bar the mufflers and the sound is very similar. He's running deltaflow Super 50's, suposed to be one of the mor quite flowmasters, and its still bloody loud and has that rough rasp/thump I like. So its got me thinking, I was worried about OVER muffling this thing now I'm thinking I need to worry about not muffling it enough!

Starting to think about 16" center-offset glasspack style like the Magnaflows, not in love with the sound generally but I might need all the muffling I can get unless I want to run multiple mufflers.

Dennis what are Q T P's?

did the super turbos bring the noise down much?

I have the same setup as the car in the video. Actually I have the same car too - a 68 GTX. I've got competition hookers with flowmasters on it and she sounds pretty much like the sound bite. Great sound. It's hard to tell how loud or quiet you'd like it. I know I like my sound.

I like it as is! like it a lot, just need to turn it down a few db. might just have to try few and see what works the best I guess...

I have the 3" TTI exhaust with "H" crossover and the Dynomax super turbo mufflers on the Charger and it is pretty quiet for a 3" system, and I did not notice any loss in performance compared to the 3.5" race bullets that came off the car (way to loud for the street.)
On my Convertible I went with the 2.5" TTI "X" crossover exhaust. It also came with the Dynomax superturbo mufflers, but I wanted it even quieter, so I installed walker Quiet flow mufflers. With the smaller 2.5" exhaust there is a larger selection of mufflers.

Those Quite Flows look really restrictive, dod you loose much power? Also how much did ti tone it down over the Super Turbos?

I've really become a fan of Spintechs...they have that crisp sound with moderate drone...Found this on YouTube...I just googled "spintech muffler on 440 Mopar"

Walker QuiteFlow SS #22154 mufflers, supposed to fit an Imperial? Has 2.5" offset inlet / 2.5" center outlet. These are stainless steel and cost about $100 each.
These are really long, 25" case, 29" overall length.
These are quieter than the superturbo, but not quiet like a new car, there is still a decent exhaust note.
I don't think they hurt performance, but they are on my Convertible which I only race about once a year at the Mopar car show.

I have Stock manifolds, 2.5" pipes with Flowmasters on my very stock 440. Flowmasters do have that nice tinging idle sound to them.

Flowmasters are somewhat loud, and do drone at a certain speed/rpm, but then it goes away. It depends on your setup where the drone will come in, and it WILL happen. For example, I have a 4 speed and 3.23 gears, so in 4th gear between 40-45mph it drones, meaning you FEEL the exhaust. At 46mph it goes away and you just hear normal exhaust noise and you can hear the radio and talk with the windows down.

Having said that, I'd likely try a different muffler when I put on headers and a full 3" exhaust. A lot of people seem to like the Dynomax Ultraflow mufflers too.
