While this is a HIGHLY arguable topic, I'd say you are fairly close, and I say that because after '71 or '72, they started to detune them and began taking the muscle out of "muscle cars" (as well as all others).

Case in point, the Cadillac 500 CID.
1970 - 400 hp (298 kW) @ 4400 rpm
1971 - 365 hp (272 kW) @ 4400 rpm
1972 - 235 hp (175 kW) @ 4400 rpm
1973 - same as above
1974 - 205 hp (153 kW) @ 4400 rpm
1975 - 210 hp (157 kW) @ 3600 rpm
1976 - A paltry 190 hp (142 kW) @ 3600 rpm

That list is a mix of gross and net horsepower ratings. Most U.S. automakers before 1971 or 1972 preferred to quote the more generous gross figures. Net figures might appear in shop manuals, technical papers, or other factory literature, but rarely showed up in advertising.
 
I have a 69 GTX, a 70 Cuda and a 74 Duster. The Cuda and Duster are drag cars. So yes, an A-body, B-Body and E-Body. But only the GTX is a Muscle car. (In my "Purist") opinion.
I have had many Mopars A, B E, and C body but I will stick with my two favorites........:thumbsup:

Never owed a C. I've had other Bs. I personally prefer B body over the other styles. It's certainly better balanced. The A-body is only quicker because it's lighter. Both A and E bodies don't corner that well. B- bodies corner alot better than they look.

I just watched a Saturday morning "Motor Trend" show. Where they road tested a few cars. Comparing some of today's and yesterday cars. The 2001 Corvette 5 obviously cornered the best. The 2009 Camero and simular Challenger struggled. Then they ran a base 68 Charger. Everyone was laughing. But afterwards the test driver came out of car saying. "This thing corners alot better than I thought." It had some body roll. But nothing to be ashamed of.

That list is a mix of gross and net horsepower ratings. Most U.S. automakers before 1971 or 1972 preferred to quote the more generous gross figures. Net figures might appear in shop manuals, technical papers, or other factory literature, but rarely showed up in advertising.
Probably true, but the point is, that they all started loosing the "muscle" starting about '71/'72. I haven't researched it, but I'm sure the same would hold true for the Road Runner, GTX, Charger, GTO, (insert your choice here). By '75/'76, the muscle car era was finished. Now that doesn't include todays HP/torque ratings. I would not want to put my Road Runner up against one of todays 4 banger rice burners. THAT is a whole different story and I don't think they are in the "muscle car" category.
 
Never owed a C. I've had other Bs. I personally prefer B body over the other styles. It's certainly better balanced. The A-body is only quicker because it's lighter. Both A and E bodies don't corner that well. B- bodies corner alot better than they look.
I am B body pride and true........Each has its pluses and minuses.....I am just an all around Mopar type of guy...

No. I have no "All original" But my Cuda build has a sick motor. (Not completed) But should be a solid 8 sec car.

On a related note....Here is the Baddest of all C bodies......I wish they made more of them but this is C body MUSCLE at its finest....Yes, it was produced by Chrysler and only a few GT's with six packs were made...

I didn't invent the term "Muscle car". And I personally prefer cars that are already altered so upgrading is not a sin. But they all were born pure factory.
 
The point of the post is that the term "Muscle car" is thrown around way too much.

Who said it was a sin?....Not me, I have owned race cars so?.....In our hobby "purist" is referred to originality......

The Boss mustang was tough to keep off. They stuffed one bad *** motor into a pony car. But motor is not the defining factor.
 
It's true the 60's & 70's made muscle, but the humble beginning of the 55 Chrysler 300 set the stage for things to come. It continued with the 56 Fury, 57 & 58 Fury. Of course Dodge had the D500 and Desoto had the Adventure. I had a 58 Fury with the 350 B engine and 2 4 Bbls.. When I bought it it had 72000 miles and I put over 400 miles every weekend driving from Dover, Del. to NY. I could beat any 327 Chevy back in the day and my car had about 100000 miles on it. I quit driving it at 147000 miles and bought a new 68 Roadrunner hardtop, 4 speed & 383. Boy did I love that car. So I think 55 was the beginning of the Muscle car and the GTO just sent it in a different direction, lighter car and big motor. And the argument continues.
