After months of procrastinating and saving up, I finally got a big block shoved into my plain-jane 72. The engine is a 71 forged crank 440, that came in a 74 Roadrunner 4X4 that I bought for parts. Yes, someone took a 74 RR with a 360, put it on a blazer chassis, dropped in a 440 and a 727 with a huge transfer case, and went to the beach. The RR was rusted and hacked beyond saving, but donated its engine, power brakes, rallye dash, buckets, and factory A/C parts to my 72. We ran into several snags on this journey, so I thought I would post them here to help others, and maybe get some help too. First thing was the Hedman 78030 headers did not fit. Apparently Hedman tested these with a 383/400 and NOT an RB motor, because we had to beat the crap out of the tubes on the drivers side to clear the steering box, and the torsion bar. Hedman said to use new engine mounts, we did, no joy... Dont waste your money on the Hedman's if you are doing an RB, look at TTI. Also, anyone considering the JC Whitney hi-lift springs should beware. The springs are great quality, but lifted the back of my car almost 6 inches, WAY too high.
I need to find a blower motor resistor, and none of the parts houses can find anything that even looks like the one from the 74 airbox. I'm also considering one of the Jegs 30502 header-back dual exhaust kits, any opinions on this kit? Thanks!
