I thought some might get a kick out of what I am working through since I bought my completely restored 68 GTX. At least that's how it was advertised. I am in the Dallas, TX area and purchased this from a guy outside of Boise ID. He restores Mopars for a living and according to him has sold hundreds of Mopars. It was on Ebay and I called the guy up and talked to him about what had been finished on the car and what shape it was in. I guess I should have spent more time asking what hadn't been done. The main reason I decided to purchase after seeing it is because I enjoy working on cars and this GTX has a good foundation to work from and the motor is correct for the car. He did give me a $1,500.00 credit after I had paid him, but continued to find things wrong.
Mater of fact I few up with the intentions of driving it back, he new this and said it was ready to drive anywhere.
This GTX was advertised with the following;
1) New paint.
2) New Interior.
3) No Rust
4) Freshly rebuilt numbers matching 440.
5) Freshly rebuilt 727 transmission.
6) New K frame.
6) New front disc. brakes.
Start with the positive, the frame is very solid and only has minor surface rust. The motor appears to have been rebuilt (no receipts) runs solid and does not smoke. The transmission although it has not been rebuild recently is does shift solid and runs fine.
Most of the interior parts are new and installed, but its the worse install I have ever seen.
I am starting in the engine compartment and repairing or installing the things needed to make it safe and presentable.
things missing or broken.
Valve cover gaskets leaked so bad it was smoking inside the car.
Heater bypassed (no heater hoses)
No horns installed.
No horn relay.
Windshield washer reservoir brittle and broken.
Spray heads are on but no water lines.
Wipers not working.
Windshield Washer circuit not working.
Commando sticker missing.
Here is before and after pictures of the engine compartment. Once the all the major things are complete I'll go back and remove the exhaust manifolds and clean and paint them. I will also paint the engine block.

Looking pretty nice now...

does looks like a good start...

it def wasn't "restored" or even freshened up a bit. {a GIANT hose re-routing the water pump back to itself, really?? lol}

if you got it for a good price, it's worth it!!!

helluva job, now it looks proper.

any pics of the interior? and any more pics of your plane(s)???? :plane:

It's amazing what some people call restored. X2 or 3 about looking like a nice base to work from. That by itself is hard to get these days.

Welcome to the 68 GTX club. I started a thread to post pictures of GTX's. You can go there and check it out and add yours.

What is really comical about the heater being bypassed is, I was expecting the heater coil to have a leak. That's why I added the shutoff, but when I hooked it up the coil was fine no leaks.

When talking to the owner he was every knowledgeable and seemed to have a quality shop. The GTX didn't have a tach in it. I asked him if he could install one he said he had one on the shelf and could have it install in no time (which he did). He also had after market mags on it that I didn't want so I asked him if he could swap them with factory. He didn't have Magnum 500's but did have Rally sports on the shelf.
He had all the right answers when talking on the phone, so it doesn't make since why he did some of the things he did. Example; he installed a new gas tank with sending unit, but used the old straps (I thought all gas tanks came with straps). He installed new bumpers front and rear, new paint on the body, so why would he reinstall bumper mounting brackets (rusty) without painting them?

I am completely redoing the interior. It came with a lot of new components but they are not installed correctly.
The dash pad appears to be original, I didn't get any pictures of the before but it was badly cracked. Also the dash between the pad, and the windshield, has a considerable amount of rust and needs to be sanded and repainted.
While I have the dash apart I am replacing the amp gauge and repainting the dash panel.

I guess you could call it a re-Restored GTX now. Its amazin as to what people think of the actual definition of restored. I have seen people clean up an old motor, install new intake & valve cover gaskets, plus add a little rattle can, if you asked them if they had rebuilt the engine, they would not deny that they had done so. And if I see another car advertised as a BARN FIND I will scream. I dont think there are enough barns in the U.S. for all those ads to be true.

It should,68 didnt have any writing on the plate either.I think the color of the wood varied betwen the 2 years

thanks, I'll check with Year one and see what they have. Everthing I am finding on Ebay describes as fits 68 or 69.

Here comes my most costly repair (I hope) the head liner was new but,,,not looking too good, as you can see from the picture. I had a local head liner shop try to re-stretch it but they called after trying and said the dome light cut out would show. So I had to replace it. :(
