I have a 440 with a 1970 casting date. The engine pad is stamped S 440 with 7 7 2 below it. The vin pad near the oil pan is blank....any info would be appreciated. I was told it was a service replacement.

It should likely be a G 440

Probably Service engine, warranty or over the counter. Blank VIN pad also fits with that.

Did'nt most service/warranty blocks have a little brass tag with a rivet holding on one side?? See anything like that??

Warranty block tag info

I discovered a warranty "short engine" tag on my 67. It is stamped "0270", perhaps where it is supposed to indicate the "model", although the stamper missed. Could that be a date of 2/1970? Does this mean the motor is 1970 spec, with 8.8:1 compression instead of 9.2.
