Need advice on a 69 GTX

Everyone,

I have the chance to purchase this car but didn't know if it was too far gone with rust or worth the time and money. It has the original engine and trans and everything is there......Just rusty. Let me know your thoughts and what kind of price I should offer if anything.

OUCH!, that one even scares me. Depends greatly on wether you plan on doing the resto work yourself or have it restored by a shop. The cost to have this car restored would be monumental, the cost to restore it yourself would just be huge. If it wasn't #'s matching engine and trans, I'd walk away. There is so much rust on this car that you don't see. What condition is the engine and trans in?, is there a build sheet with it?, I see what is left of the fender tag. It's doable, but you will need a nice doner car for this one and of course, it's green. I'd offer $1,200 and if you feel like you have to have it, not over $2,200. The less you pay for it the less financially mollested you will feel in the end, no pun intended.
 
I agree lot's of $$$$$$$$$$$ to finish if you can't do a lot of the wrk yourself.
 
It looks pretty much unmolested which is a good thing, however it looks to need lot's and lots of work, which translates into lot's of $$$$$$$$$.
If your heart is set on a F-8 // Black gut, go for it; we have all seen worse cars come back to life.
It will have to be a keeper, you will probably never get your money back if you decide to sell it someday.
 
Thanks for the feedback. I would have to have the work done by someone else. I get a good rate on the body work but I'm sure after your posts that it will be a huge amount of work. I know you can buy most of the sheet metal aftermarket parts but not sure if I should do that or find a donor. What other models could I use for a donor car? The engine and transmission were pulled and garaged so they both are in good shape but will probably have to be rebuilt. No rust on those. The fender tag is long gone and no build sheet either which makes it even less attractive. Anyone care to guess on the resto cost?
 
I forgot to add that it does have the air grabber option and everything is there including the original carb. Not sure if all the 69's had the air grabber with the hood or not.
 
Unless you run a shop and have access to the proper tools ,Id say no...Way too much rust under the car...It,ll need way to much money to make it worth it...Matching numbers or not...

I would say she can be "ressurected", but it's gonna be a lot of work! Being she's original (including engine) makes it a heck of a bit more appealing. Hope you really good with a welder and sheetmetal cause to drop that off at a body shop to be redone would probably mean taking a huge equity loan or winning a small lottery.

If you do plan on bringing her back yourself, keep in mind what 1badgtx said, "tools, equipment and facility to accomodate a project of that magnitude." Another expensive part of restoring a car.

Good luck whatever route you go on it ghad14. Like I said before, in my opinion she can be saved, but it is going to be a whole bunch of TLC.
 
To answer your question about Air Grabber hood.

No !! they (GTX) all did not come with the "Air Grabber" Hood option.

But you would think that they all did; by going to the shows and cruise-ins.

One other interesting thing I noticed which is a Plus, it appears to have the Vacum Boost on the fire wall (Power Brakes!!!) maybe????
 
Yup. Power brakes, and it does appear to be a N96 air grabber car (ask me how I know)
 
Without the fender tag and build sheet I'm not sure what came original with the car. It has front disc brakes and cruise control. The original owner told me that he had factory 60/40 split seats installed in it back in 70 along with the brakes and cruise control. I don't know how much of this is true or not? I love the car but wish it was in better shape. The frame on the passenger side is decent but its rotted out on the driver side and not sure how big of a job that is to have completed. I just hate to see something that rare with all the matching numbers just rot.

I would buy it and sit it in safe storage and wait for a nice 69 RR or Satelite to come along then let your imagination go wild.
I wouldn't let it go if you can get a good deal on it, but to rebuild it is ???able.

You could use almost any `68 or `69 B-body as a doner, `70 as well and preferably a 2 door but you can also get a lot of parts from a 4 door and I would avoid a Charger.
