You can SEE what it will take to save this car in this very forum. Go to the "B Body Stiffening" thread and see what I had to do to save my 70 GTX.
I did 95% of this work myself and I don't even want to GUESS at how many hours I have in JUST replacing metal!
I will say that I took it on as a labor of love of finally getting to a point in my life where I had the time and $$$ to do what I wanted, and I wanted to build this car.....I have NEVER even welded before I started this, so money had nothing to do with it. Sure, I wish I hadn't had to replace so much steel but it is what it is. I am having the time of my life!
Only you can answer the why.
