Hi I need some help in decoding the numbers on the engine pad in picture attached.
I know the casting date that is on the block and it is Jan.9,1970. We saw it on the block just did not take a picture of it.
The block is suppose to be a 1971 service/warranty block.
Thanks for helping me out!
Recent pics of my car now restored back to how it was born.

Its hard for me to read the ID pad in photo.
Looks like "S 440 " then backwards "C"
Then the assymbly date of " 4 1 ?2"

I know "S" is used for "Service Engines"(warranty engines)or for model year 1962 , and because there are no 440's made in 62, safe bet it is a "Service Engine"

The backwards "C" can be for "Special crankshaft and Pistons"
It is also used for 1967 , but because you said the block was cast in 1970 it must be for "special crank and pistons"

I found the info in my little white book, by Galen Govier mine is an old one from May 2001.
And what "Special crankshaft and pistons" means, IDK?

In 1971 the original engine has part of the vin stamped on it, I don't think the service block has any, you can look where the vin would be stamped on a normal engine and see what yours has there, might give you an extra clue.
Sorry I don't know more.

Hi thanks for replying. The special crank and pistons maybe are for 6 pack as the block that was ruined was a 440 6 pack.
Thanks again.
