I had the same problem finding a new J-bolt last summer. I never found anyone that repops the 66-67 b-body j-bolt. I finally had to go to a junkyard and carefully remove one.
I'll find a bolt that's partially threaded, bend it and then cut off the bolt head and Tig weld a heavy washer or two to the end.
I'm currently not fabricating at a shop anymore and my Tig is on loan to a friend. Industrial and then ornamental fabrication was what I was doing until about 3 years ago then the market fell out. We have the 2nd worse economy in the country from what I hear.
I still have a welding shop I can work on projects at, but it's a bit of a ride...and point and click was easier ;)
I hear ya. I stripped 2 66s in the last couple years and went out and searched my bolt drawers but I guess I didnt save any. 30 minutes later and no luck. Was hoping to do a fellow 66 net guy a favor. Sorry, heres my 66
How to make a '66 gas tank strap hook ( fuel tank strap stud )
As suggested in one of the threads I read, I went looking for an eye bolt and found the perfect candidate. Size of eye was almost perfect.
Parts from Home Depot:
Lehigh Brand - Part #7135 - 3/8" Stainless Steel Eyebolt with Nut
(3) 1/4" SS Flat Washers
(1) 3/8" SS Nut ( to lock with other nut )
-Trimmed eye to correct length for hook area.
-Welded (3) 1/4" SS washers on end filling inside with weld
-Then bent the section between hook and threads slightly. In the one photo you can see which way it needs to bend to look like the original part
- You may want to wait until after install to trim to length. Even making it a little longer..it was still tough go get going
