a guy near me has to get out of his rented garage and has four 440,s and a 400 for sale but is looking for an offer. They are all rebuildables only none of them run. They range from 68 to 72. My question is what to offer since i have the first chance to get them but i don't want to offend him.

800-1k for the lot is where I would offer. But I am sure others will have different opinions on their value.

Are these complete engines? If they are complete, I would agree about a 1k or a little more.

as long as you are sure they are not boat anchors(cracked) then $200 each is a good offer.you may still offend him, some people think that this stuff is gold since the tv auctions started to get out of controll.

They are complete all of them only one has a carb. No hp blocks.

Don't know what prices are like where you live but in the Houston area, 200 each might get a sale....

Five engines, no HP blocks, and none of them run? I would offer $750, and if he balks at that, tell him he can try to get more but he better plan on finding space in his living room for most of those engines to sit for a long time because non-running, non-HP, engines aren't in big demand... especially in a group of five. :)

around here these guys are trying to get 1000-1500 for a running 400 or 440, and even as much as 2000. and these engine are smogger motors that have never been rebuilt. being that he needs to get them out, and you have no idea if they even spin freely, 1k would be a deal. 200 a piece would be a total score. let us know how that pans out.

I can get a running smogger 440, complete with a six-month warranty, for $650. Built-up HP engines with some bells and whistles start at about $1,800.

That's pretty cheap imo. I have a rebuilt 70 model 440 that's standard bore, closed chambered mild ported heads (10.3-1), 2.08/1.74 valves with titanium retainers, Hemi grind cam, steel gaskets, adjustable rockers, forged crank, choice of intake etc and I can't get any respect for it! I'll just keep it and used it eventually....

My input is:
"Don't buy em if you ar not going to use them"
I've done that in the past.
They end up sitting around.
What are YOUR plans?
To re-sell them?
Anyway, good luck with your decision.

Plan was to keep the blocks and the steel cranks and junk the rest. The heads are to hard to get rid of, to many out there. Unless someone out there needs some thing.

Some of the heads, blocks & cranks in that 68-72 range are good even on the non HP smog engines... Here in Cali., I would say "like is, as is, were is" maybe $1000-$1500 depending on completeness & condition of course {things are pricier here in Cali. sometimes}, the 68-72 #906 383 & 440 head is good, the 71-72 #346 400-440 head is good, the 71-72 #230 400 block is desirable also especially for stroker builds, the 68-72 #430 440 blocks are good, the 68-72 440 #158 & #160 forged cranks are good, the 71-72 #159 400 forged cranks are also good, any engines with the #923 cast rods are generally not very desirible.... There is a site with casting numbers you can see the engines forged vs cast & what cylinder heads etc. , www.mopar1.us/bigblock.html , good luck, happy Moparing

Did buy 3 motors. 68, 440 , 72, 440 and the 400, for $600.00. Taking them apart soon. Anyone need parts let me know.

Best deal I ever made I traded a old man a camper shell for a Dakota for 4 complete440s, I think I had $100 in the camper shell!!
