OK, I am going to build my original 383 for this 63 Polara vert. However I want to pep it up a bit. I would like to get 450 HP and make it very streetable. Its its original 63 383. I dont know the heads of this era and I am open to buying a set of Eddy heads or what ever it takes to make it right.

The car will have its power steering, power brakes and after market air.

I had planned on using my 500 (650 HP) stroker for this project but my engine builder says he thinks its not right for the street.Solid lifter motor and would not last long when cruising in it.

So I need to build a nice running 383. what have you folks done and what suggestions do you have on what to use from this engine and what to replace or upgrade.

Consider keeping the original 383 in original condition and building a stroked 400 or 440. Very easy to get the desired horsepower from 500 cubic inches of Mopar stroker with a hydraulic cam and still be able to run air conditioning. Just do a good set of aluminum heads on the stroker and have Racer Brown grind a cam for your specific application.

We had our 426MW rebuilt to stock specs with the exception of a hydraulic cam (same spec as original tho) and a lower comp ratio (10.2:1 instead of 11:1), and that made 450 on the dyno.

I'd have thought a 383 with a few tweaks on the cam, compression and maybe aftermarket heads, you'll easily get 450

Im in the same boat with my 63 Polara, I am going to use the factory 383 punch it out a bit, nice heads and cam, wanting around 10.1 comp. I have the intake already i will use, thinking forged pistons so maybe i can put a little spray on it.

P.S. there is a article online on Mopar Muscle that took a 383 with iron heads and built it step by step giving part numbers and it make 450hp at 6200rpm, not bad for iron heads.

450 gross, 450 net, or 450 at the wheels? 450 gross should be fairly easy. 450 at the wheels will take some additional thought. I'm looking to do about the same thing, including keeping it streetable, and I'd like to get decent MPG as well. I'm aiming at 450 net. The 451 10:1 with AL head route is plan A so far.

BTW...I LOVE that car.

My issue is that with the work needed for the iron heads I may as well step up and get some done Eddy heads and be done with it.

ok, what is the 451 10:1 with AL head route? Is the 451 a stroker? and what is the AL HEAD ROUTE?

Stock heads with larger valves, pocket porting, gasket matching and the right piston/cam/intake/exhaust combo can deliver over 1 HP per cubic inch. How much over is subject to many variables and how much extra money you want to spend tho.

If you were happy with around 400 HP out of your otherwise stock 383, I think you could do it inexpensively and without going to aftermarket heads.

Yep, 451 stroker- 440 crank ground for 400 mains in a 400 block bored .035 over. Aluminum heads with better burn efficeincy (quench) and better heat dissipation allow higher compression without knock or ping. 440 source has the crank and piston package for $1900, and the heads for $500 each. Just gotta find a 400 and do the machine work.

Carolina Machine sells a built 512 stroker short block for $4000 or complete engine with AL heads for $7000. They will build a 451, but I don't have a price. Have a 1 year warranty. Shipping may be pricey, but I am close enough to drive and maybe save money.

CME lists the AL head 512 with 9.5:1 at 485HP (I'm guessing gross), 10:1 at 522.

They also list a 10:1 iron head 383 at 400HP, and AL head at 425, for 4K and 5.5K complete. Short block is $1900.
Hard to beat that for the machine work.

Hmm, been a couple months since I was on the site, and it looks like they have raised prices a bit.

Why don't you just de-tune your 500 stroker with a hydraulic or street roller cam and drop it in? BTW - solid cams can be fine (yours may be a bit wild) for cruising on the street, just might need some periodic adjustments. Slant sixes were solid lifter engines right up 'tll the last year of production, no problem cruising them around!!!

Thats what I originally asked my builder but apparently its a lot more than just the cam. I think he said several other items would also been to be dealt with.

d/tune

thats my thinking also. you only get one original motor per car. put it away properly and de/tune the big one. i will bet a 6 pack that it is cheaper to d/tune than to build up. and, you will already have a proven engine.

I agree with detuning. I'd like to know the specs, though.

I have lost the spec sheet on the engine and sent an email and phone call into 440source, who sold me the kit. I purchased the Eddy heads through my builder. I do know it was 10:5 compression and a solid lifter motor.
