I need to replace the 8.25 rear in my 74 Road Runner with an 8.75 to accommodate the installation of a 440, and I need some guidance as to what all I need to do.

I've been going through a real drought of 8.75 rears for the past year or so, and the closest one I've found is a non-sure grip about 180 miles away and the guy wants $400 for it, which seems pretty steep. I found one nearby from a 67 Fury III. It's a non-sure grip 741 case with 2.94 gears. It is 1.3" narrower than the 71-74 rear, but since I'll be running wide tires I don't think it'll make much of a difference. I can get this for $125.

I also found a sure grip chunk nearby that's a 489 case with a Richmond 4:10 Gear Set. The guy says it has a small yoke, but comes with an adapter U-Joint.

So what I'm wondering is:

1. Will the drum brake hardware from my 8.25" rear fit onto the 67 8.75" rear?
2. I didn't know there were different size yokes, so would a driveshaft for an 8.25 rear have a small yoke set-up?

all the brake parts are the same with the posible exception of the backing plate.not sure if the 8.25 and 8.75 have the same bolt up pattern.so get a rear with backing plates if you can.
looking up the u joints seem to come up with the same #'s.i have seen both small and large u joints on many diff cars,so do a bit of measuring just to be sure.if he has the adapter u joint it shouldnt matter either way.

Don't forget there are different no. Splines per yoke fine and coarse. Fine has 35 and coarse has eight i think. The large pinion isn't worth the extra money when it comes down to it. You'll bust a u joint before the pinion gear. Just my two cents. I have two large fine spline yokes if interested.

$400 does not strike me as an unfair price for a 8.75 complete rear end, especially if it is a direct bolt in. When i was trying to acquire one for my '71 Demon, everyone was asking well over $1500 when they actually had the one I wanted. I ended up putting one out of an Explorer in it. It has 3.73 gears a locker unit and disc brakes, plus the wheel bolt pattern is the same as b-body Mopars. That is the 8.8 with 31 spline axles. I had to narrow it 2.75 inches so it would fit the a-body, but I don't think it would be necessary to narrow it for a b-body. Total cost involved for the rear end and a spare short axle shaft was less than $250. I figure as long as it is not a #'s matching car (fix it to fit your needs) then if I do not tell anybody what it is they just think it came factory installed. It is a good rear end and looks like it belongs in there. Just make sure it is out of an Explorer so you get the 31 spline axles. Also '95 up comes with disc brakes, and be sure to get the park brake cables as well. I already know I will hear negative thoughts about this rear end but it works GREAT. lol

Also I do have a 8.75 that is right for your car.

I guess I'll have to be happy with that wrong flag.
