Hey everyone,

I am fairly new around here and a huge newbie to 60's Mopars. This weekend I was finally able to pickup my new to me 67 Coronet R/T with a 440. The car has had about 90% of the restoration work done and all that remains is a little bit of mechanical and interior work. Here are the problems I would like some guidance / opinions on how to handle.

1. Power Steering Pump Leak - Looks like its leaking from the front of the reservoir. What is the place to send the pump and reservoir to to get it rebuilt?

2. Blown out rear wheel cylinders - The car has an SSBC 4 piston front brake system and a master / booster to complement it. The rear drums have the cylinders blown out on both wheels. Could they system be sending too much pressure and blowing them out or is it just a fix it and move on type scenario? I have been looking at rear disc brake conversion kits but am not sure which one to go with.

3. Rear Driveshaft U-Joint, how much play (if any) should there be? The car has a 742 rear in it with a 3.73 center section. The u-joint that meets up with the yoke has some play in it. I think the u-joint needs to be replaced regardless. I want to make sure I order the right one. The off thing here is the "C" style brackets that hold the joint to the yoke are fully tighted but I can see light coming through between the u joint and that C bracket that holds it to the yoke. Makes me think the joint may not be the right size but it may be normal too. Any guidance here would be appreciated.

4. Center Console - The console in the car was pretty rough and the previous owner had ordered a bunch of new console pieces. Not sure where they came from but they look just like the ones that www.pgclassic.com sells. Lots of options to choose from - all brand new pieces are there. I was hoping to use the original console and then mount all the new pieces to it - when I did this the shift plate does not sit flush enough to get the mounting screws in and close the glovebox door (the one on the console). When I set it up on the aftermarket lower console it fits better but still not great. Any guidance you can offer me on getting this all fixed up would be greatly appreciated. I like the original lower due to the weight the aftermarket one seems flimsy. Looking to tighten things up to avoid rattles.

5. Does anyone have a lead on a center section for a 742 rear that is loaded up with 2.73 or 2.94 (or something close to that) with a posi or suregrip style setup in it? I have 3.73 in there now and would like to have the 2.xx series gears for highway driving.

There are a few more things but I will post more on that later once I get to focusing on those items. Most important right now is getting the car reliable and roadworthy. These few things will get it there. My goal is to get it ready for Powertour in June. Thanks so much for all of your guidance and opinons!

I'll deal with 1. Power Steering Pump Leak . Since I have been going through my spares. Your leak is the large o-ring between the canister and pump body. Replace it, sorry I dont have the std oring number on me. This is all you need to do. I actually disassembled a pump just to learn on a core. Found the internals in perfect condition, and suspect 95% of pumps dont need a full rebuild. The slippers or vanes generally dont fail, and the pump being self lubricating, dont wear out. The drill , is to take the can off and clean with solvent to remove any sludge, replace o-ring , and button it up.

3. Rear Driveshaft . Here again a little background. 67's came with a mid size rear dif flange. In between a Large and a Small. Your replacement rear end with the new gears , may have a 'normal' 68 and up Large U joint flange. Hense the spacing, or gap look you are seeing.

Thanks so much for responding. I will take a look at the pump tonight and see what I can find. On the u-joint is there a replacement I need to get for what I have? Will I need to change the driveshaft to get the correct fitting to fit the larger ujoint or should it fit on that end as well?

On your p/s pump, while it is apart I would replace the shaft seal too!generally that is where the leak comes from. You'll need to have the pulley pulled off,and pressed on! The u joint should'nt have any movement! VeryLittle at all. There is no slop in the straps, side to side or back and forth!Does it have a large or small yoke?Wrong driveshaft to yoke size!

Thanks so much for responding. What is the proper driveshaft to yoke size for a 742 rear end or should I just take it up to a shop and have a new driveshaft made up? I have a bit of slop - I fear if I get on it too much the way it is I will get myself in trouble with some broken parts.
