Recently I had a friend inquire about going in as partners to buy a '65 Coronet, not to buy, build and enjoy, but to buy, build and "rape". This sort of thing irritates me to no end. I have the cars I have to drive them, enjoy them and scare the hell out of my kids with, not to try and build my portfolio with!! It seems to me that every a-hole with ANY Mopar thinks his car/truck/van, regardless of year is worth big $$ because of what some Bozo paid on these TV auto auctions!!! God forbid the car is a Hemi or even a big block... An elder Mopar "legend" advised me long ago, "if you buy to build and enjoy, you will have so much more fun than just buying for an investment." At the time I thought, "what are you talking about, why else would I buy these cars?" Now I know what he meant! Just because G'ma left her '75 Cordoba with a 318 to some "gearhead" grandchild driving a Honda, doesn't mean it's a nostalgic street Mopar that terrorized the competition and is worth $9000... And just because someone marks up the car to $15K and claims it's "RARE" doens't make it true!! Now I am seeing people trying to sell Literature (owners manuals and titles) for hundreds, even thousands of $ as ornaments or a wall display?!?! Has everyone gone totally outter limits:mad:?!?! I can still pick up a '65 project sedan with all the glass, doors and trim for $2000:yes: (Sorry, supplier secret) Sorry, I just had to vent a little!!

Ditto.....you hit the nail right on the head. The prices on 60s stuff are out of site, more than half the stuff on ebay dose not sell. Even other listings have prices no one can afford and the stuff has been listed for months. I will take a 64 Savoy if you find one you dont want ! Not going to cut mine up just to race so I have been looking awhile.

I totally agree.....now-a-days the first question people ask is, "Is it numbers matching?" or "how much is it worth?"......who gives a &%$@?!?!?!? Its my car and I'm gonna drive it!

Yes its true as people have gone nuts on the prices. Thats like a 318 Dart I saw for $12,000 !!!! I said to the guy the 318 Dart is not a muscle car ! Its not like it is a 340 or 383 but he wants 383 prices for a 318 car. So many money hungry idiots. Ron

Bob, I just sold a '64 Savoy (yes, a 2 door) for under 2 grand to my buddy... I will ask around. And YES, I felt better after posting. I am so glad to see other Mopar nuts like me feel the same.

Same thing as guns... i was asked about an m1 carbine since i have several. My advise included an internet site for "real world prices" but then emphasized to look at whether or not they were actually saleing at the asking prices. People have lost their damn minds on all this. And i hate to say it but most here will agree.. barret jackson has done much more damage than good. Even the "entertainment value" is lost when you stop to think what it will cost us the true car guys.

The first surge in prices was caused by investors and speculators trying to find a "safe" place to put their money. That wouldn't sustain the values on it's own, so the prices fell. And when they fell the enthusiasts started buying the cars. THAT would have sustained the values IF the faction of the government that seems to think we should give things (money, houses, health care) to those who chose NOT TO WORK FOR IT hadn't done what they did, which caused the economy to drop dead.

But the prices (values) of these cars can't help but go up just like any other desirable commodity or collectible that has a finite and dwindling number.

I seriously doubt there is anyone on here who would be happy to part with their MOPAR at a price that reflects what non-Mopar people think "some old car" would sell for.

So you'll excuse me if I don't price my Hemi runner for $300.

All that said, I'm NOT a rich man, and I cannot afford to go write a check for any car I want at any time I want, and day of the week I want. But like a Van Gogh painting, the prices will go up, and they'll stay up........if the government will gtF out of our business

now I feel a bit better:HappyNewYear:

I wouldn't ask a Hemi runner be sold for $300 no matter how bad it was... It's the '70 Cuda 6cyl. "parts car" with no deck lid, no floors, no motor/trans, no doors and what IS there is an absolute rusty heap for the price of $11,000... I understand there are very nice cars going for $25k-$50k, that's great for the people who can afford them. It's the "posers" trying to sell a $500 1974 Duster being advertised as "rare" for $9000. There isn't any "room" for the true car guys, who would like to pick up a cheap Duster for a weekend bracket racer because of the ridiculous prices most are asking.

Hemi Roadrunner? Nice!!

No, it's not nice. It needs everything. But I agree with you on the obvious $500 car someone thinks is worth big money.

I was telling a story about a 68 Hemi runner I went to look at back in the late 90s. Old coot that owned it said on the phone that "You could get a new Hemi motor out Hemming's way, and that Chrysler would stamp it for ya to make it a number's matching car. Be worth FORTY GRAND then." This was before ma had started making 426's again and, as we all know, "Hemmings" isn't a place.

crazy

The government has nothing to do with the price of these old cars directly or indirectly.

For 99% of the owners or want-to-be-owners don't HAVE to have them for their only transportation. If it is your only trans. and you can't afford it, get rid of it just as you would a car that has outlived its economic life. Would you spend $3000. for a replacement engine for your Yugo or would you put the money towards another newer more dependable car?

The market on these old cars is driven by only two things, supply and demand. Right now people are not DEMANDING them beyond the available supply so the prices are down. This just means that SOME people are willing to let go of a limited supply vehicle for less than they would have when they weren't hurting for money and the buyers are capitalizing on it and driving the price down. Additionally, money has dried up for a lot of potential buyers so there again there is less demand.

As an example, if they only built 25 of a certain desireable car, and there are only 5 known examples of it left and only one of them is for sale, how much buying leverage do you think any given buyer has if there are TWO or more buyers chasing that car?

People asking the stupid money for the examples you guys have sighted are effecting the parts market in a minamal way because they are only worth what they are worth as parts, no one is going to give them big money because they don't have anything worth restoring. Those are the guys wishing in one hand and $hiting in the other, and we all know which hand will be full first. Don't let these idiots bother you just because they have a part you want and are unrealistic, just move on to someone who is and buy your part.

Supply and demand gentlemen.

I would have to say it is my opinion that the Gov't does not have anything to do with the value or price of collector cars. Based on the economy and what people speculate values are I guess there could be an indirect impact. I think it is the nature of the beast. We live in a very greedy "me me" society. I see less and less people who are willing to help people out if there isn't something in it for them. We are a very materialistic society. I guess that includes me since I am putting together a muscle car. However I am restoring it with alot of elbow grease and one month at a time. I am not financing anything and I would never buy a restored car becasue I like the chase and the fixing up process

I am on my soap box here, but hang with me. The media, Antiques Roadshow, Barrett Jackson, Mecum etc.. have added to the problem of prices and greed in my opinion. However it is a free market and people can ask what price they want, buyers need to be savy and educated. Ok, I am off of my soapbox now.

One more thing: I do truely appreciate all on here who I have interacted with. You have hepled to provide free knowledge and in several instances great prices on stuff I need for my car. Thanks!

I respectfully disagree. before the mortgage fiasco that has pushed everything down hill the car market was quite strong. Prices were high, and there was no end in sight. But thanks to the people who don't think anyone should be held responsible for their own actions, or should have to be able to AFFORD the house they' re buying, or think it's a great idea to allow millions of people who don't belong in to our once great country and give them things (medical etc) that YOU or I are not privy to, they've ruined the economy. And by screwing with people's wallets they've messed up the car market, cause people have lost their jobs (or a lot of their income) and feel like they have to "bail out."

simple.

I would say the decline in the economy started shortly after 9/11. We have an antique business on the side and can distinctly trace the decline start point there. People who lived in homes prior to that, that they could not afford began to be impacted. Banks made some poor lending practices to people they should not have, and loaned with the basic principal of 2.5 times a household income and beyond. They also began to loan 100 to 120 percent of the homes value which meant people were into homes thay could not afford and did not need to have a down payment for. At this same time credit card debt began to balloon. Our materialitic needs expanded and when we could only make our house payments with our income we as a society decided to charge the rest. The media in my opinion still has alot to do with it because we watch it and believe we also need bigger and better. I live in a cash world and only finance my modest house. If the the rest of the USA would do this we would be in a much better situation. Still at the end of the day it is a persons choice to run up credit, or get into a 300,000 home with a 75,000 income. I have more issues with all of those folks walking away from their debts and banks setting them up in this type of situation. Wait this is a B-Body site, how did I get here?

This posting is titled "Need to vent..." so fella's, VENT AWAY!!!! I appreciate and respect everyone's opinions, so press on gentlemen!!
