In my opinion, THE, THE greatest drummer of all time!

His wife died of cancer IIRC and then he rode around the world on a motorcycle!

His daughter was killed in a car accident. He took a hiatus to sort things out.

Heaven has one outstanding band to play for the everlasting, eternal songs of Praise.
I am going to miss him, but I am also going to ROCK to some RUSH in remembrance of him.

RIP best drummer ever, and in a trio who were professional musicians first and foremost. Hard to find that in many rock bands. I will add that I may have some bias ... having seen Rush 12 times starting with the Moving Pictures tour in 1981, but they have enough accolades over 40 years to back me up.

Neil's book Ghostrider about aimlessly riding his motorcycle for a year after suffering loss and how how contemplates how to move ahead with life is a good read if you are going through something similar. It's especially relatable if you ride.

This is shaking me up harder than I've ever experienced for someone I never knew....
The best rock drummer ever, period, who also wrote all the lyrics for the band - admittedly
quite intellectual lyrics at that, especially in the rock genre.
In a band of master musicians, he was the Professor who constantly studied and learned from
others at his chosen instrument, regardless of musical genre' - and they, he.

Yes, he lost his 19 year old daughter in a car accident, followed 10 months later by his wife to
cancer. Yep, he hit the road (on his favorite BMW motorcycle) and saw a good chunk of the world,
wandering about while he reconciled in his own mind whether he wanted to continue living....
and what came of that was not only a great book (Ghost Rider) but the development of a very
engaging writer, too.
A man who had much reason not to be - turned out to be quite the optimist in life.

He leaves his current wife and a 12 year old daughter, who he had retired from active touring to spend
more time with just a few years ago, before they found out about his own cancer.
Ironic as hell, really - and not very fair.

I can't begin to grasp this. Rush guided me through my formative years (graduated high school in '85). They were my hands-down favorite ever since my older brother brought home A Farewell to Kings. Neil's lyrics, and the band as a whole, helped form who I am...even today. Although I never knew you...farewell my old friend.

I'm 57, 58 this month.
In the last 4 years, I've lost 4 of my friends, my age group, to that scourge of a disease. The most recent was only a week ago. He went into the hospital, I saw him every day, and by the 8th day, 15 minutes after I left, he left the earth.

My first concert was Rush. I've always regarded Neil as the best. Very sad to see him go. RIP

Back in the early 80's in college, i spent many hours catching a buzz and listening to Bytor and the Snow Dog in the dorms with my buddies. I was always amazed at the sound that only 3 guys created. Between Geddy Lee's unique voice and the Professor on the drum kit it was truly unique. Don't know how Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson feel with Neil Peart gone. After 40+ years, must be like having your arm cut off. RIP professor.

He fought Glioblastoma (brain cancer) for 3 1/2 years. It's amazing he lasted that long. Twenty two years ago, the same thing took my father after only 4 months and my wife's cousin after 8 months. Neil didn't go easily or willingly. I agree, F cancer. RIP Professor.

Trying to finish the last color on a job last night was tough. My heart is still in shreds.

We shared a birthdate and a love of drums, and countless hours together that he'll never know about.

Caress of Steel, Hemispheres, 2112, Moving Pictures, Signals and dozens of the others in my collection ran through my head.

With a very heavy heart, I bid a sad Farewell to my King.

Now, at last I fall before The Fountain of Lamneth
I thought I would be singing
But I'm tired ... out of breath
Many journeys end here
But, the secret's told the same
Life is just a candle and a dream
Must give it flame ...

True talent at it's best. Neil will be missed but never forgotten as the best. RIP

In this video he's playing without one of his toms. It's back stage being repaired by Grump but that doesn't stop Neil. You can see it in his face that he's missing it but he makes up for it. Then watch his expression when Grump installs the repaired tom as he's playing! Awesome stuff!

I listened to the first 3 Rush albums last night. Is there a ringing in here?

I didn't know Neil was not the drummer on the first album until now. Talk about your happy accidents. I don't think we'd be talking about Rush as much today without Neil Peart from the 2nd album forward.

First drummer had diabetes and his parents (at 16) wouldn't let him tour.
(not sure if it's the same guy on the first album, though)

I tell ya, if anyone tells me I can't do something because of my diabetes, we gonna throw down.

As recently as 2012, Geddy and Alex called Neil "the new guy".
