Neutral lock out

Dah, brain dead here. There are only 2 possibilities. #1 the relay is shorted internally. #2 the red/tan wire circuit is grounded. That's why it needs to be tested disconnected. Does it crank disconnected? Is the relay wire indeed connected to the center pin? (In the pic it looks correct). Check that the wire itself isn't pinched. Then the problem lies either in the switch itself or the rooster comb on the valve body. The switch can be tested with an ohmmeter. The outer 2 pins should show continuity to each other in reverse only. They should never have continuity to the center pin. The center pin should have continuity to ground in neutral and park only.

Ok, I apologize, but I left out a key piece of information. I have an aftermarket Cheetah Shifter in my car, and I am assuming that I need to connect this shifter in this loop somewhere? If that helps you to help me, I appreciate the assistance. Again, sorry for any inconvenience this poor information sharing caused.

Makes no difference what shifter is in it if you have the factory switch and wiring. Did you follow my instructions in the las post? What were the results?
Doug

I am going out to the garage right now to check continuity. How does the shifter connect to the electrical circuit, so the neutral safety switch knows to lock out or not allow the car to start in gear? Right now it the car starts in any position.

Something is wrong. The two outer pins have continuity in any gear. The center pin does not have continuity to the ground in any gear. What does this mean? It seems to me that the shifter is not connected to this system?

It seems to me that the shifter is not connected to this system?

and this may be... if you pull the three prong switch out of the trans, do you see the rooster comb inside??..... that's the part that would
contact the switch when in reverse, neutral or park.

It's possible that the rooster comb is the style that had the plastic covering to insulate it. The plastic can break off. It looks like it's time to drop the pan and have a look.

I went to the neutral safety switch out of the transmission, and tranny fluid began to pour out. I wanted to see what it connected to? When I take down the pan, what am I looking for? If you have a picture, that would help me. Thank you.

You probably need to remove VB to see rooster comb. You could find chunks of plastic in pan. When I drained mine had a pan with no lip and one with a lip. You could drain it mostly by NSS then the pan? When you put the VB back in get VB and parking brake rod nearly in. Have someone slowly turn rear tires by hand while you get VB and parking brake rod in. Had to PM Doug about how to do it since it had been 25 years since I did any trans work. When he told me had a "Oh ya" moment.

I have to work on my wife’s car. I may not be able to get to this until after Christmas. I will definitely let you know when I drain the tranny, what I find. Thank each of you for helping me with this. The pics are excellent! Merry Christmas if I don’t get to this until after Christmas!!!

Sorry I have been away so long. I got sick, then came down with Covid, then had some negative after effects, that lingered for a couple weeks. I am back now! I had to work on my wife’s car as I said earlier, so I went to move the RR. I reattached the plug I made, but I turned it right side up. It worked! I think maybe I did not have it pushed in all the way before. This is awesome. I can’t thank each of you enough for hanging in there with my incompetence. Thank you!!! Now I have to start a new thread asking for help with this shut off switch! Hooraaaah!

Thanks for the reply. Tell me how this works and what makes it better?

If will eliminate the need to turn off the rear safety switch when the car is parked. Using the 2 post, the field wire is fed by battery voltage, not voltage from the ignition switch. So with the 2 post, if the safety switch is on the field circuit is on.

4 post is legal. 3 requirements; The switch connection are in the positive circuit. The switch shuts the engine off. The switch is labeled and accessible from outside the car.

Can you give me wiring directions for a handicapped person? Detailed and simple. Example: Positive battery to one side of the switch? Negative to the other? Which side of switch to the alternator?
