So i had my motor rebuilt last season, new block, etc...a guy walks past my car at a cars/coffee last week and says..."new engine huh"...love that new engine smell".

Is this a thing? i do smell a fuel type smell in the garage after i shut her down..but it goes away...something i should worry about...or is there a smell when they are new??

Sorry if this is a stupid question

mmmmmm yes, nothing like the smell of fresh paint at 190 + degrees ........ love it

Ahhhh yes, the new engine smell! I love it.

so..that's a normal smell then? i don't see any fuel leaking anywhere

Yes, perfectly normal as all that fresh paint out gases. Shouldn't smell like gas unless you have a gas leak. But do go around and check these next few days for any leaks or anything abnormal..

I love the smell of a new engine in the morning.

Built last season? How many run to full temp cycles has it had? Just how many coats of paint did you put on the engine lol

baking paint does have a distinct smell.if you smell a minor amount of fuel smell when you stop it is normal.if it lingers for any amount of time check for any leaking for sure.

New engine smell use to be when the header gaskets and collector gaskets would bake from the ex gases.."the old style gasket material with asbestos in them.
That smell always reminds me of new engines...:love4:

Second only to race gas exhaust. In the morning. In the redwoods. Sweet.

it smells strong when i pull into the garage for about 10 min...open the slider and keep the garage door open...but it goes away...if it was a fuel leak, wouldn't the smell linger longer?

there is a distinct smell between , fuel , header paint , and engine enamel. if you are smelling gas , then its gas, paint burning off does not smell like fuel. after a few heat cycles the engine enamel smell goes away. if you have painted headers , the smell of those can last for weeks. carburetors just smell sometimes especially if they are rich, throttle shaft leak or if it is dumping gas , but it usually goes away after a little bit. check every path your fuel is taking from the tank to the carb with the car running and with it off in search of any wetness. I have had ever so slight leaks that Ive found only by running my fingers under and over fuel line junctures such as the fuel pump and carb inlet.

Remember also that our cars aren't like new cars that have sealed systems and vapor recovery. You will get a fuel smell for a while after pulling into a garage (carburetors, air cleaners, fuel tank vented to the atmosphere). Perfectly normal for cars of the 60s & 70's.
