I ordered a new steel fuel line for the Coronet (pump to carb) last week, and installed it today. Several years ago, I had replaced the carb with a Carter Competition Series (AFB), but did not have the right fuel line to hook up to it; as I had a Holley 600 vacuum secondary carb before that. So, I had rubber fuel line from that pump to the carb with the filter inline for what was supposed to be a temporary affair. That was in 1993.
Yeah, I know that running rubber line like that is a bad idea, but this was supposed to be temporary. What precipitated me to replace the line with the correct steel line was the fact the car was nearly impossible to start cold, and ran like crap once warmed up. I'd have to prime the carb to get it to run, either cold, or sitting after a while warm. Last week, I noticed the fuel line had collapsed a bit after a highway run. Time to fix the damn thing! So, I got the line from Mancini and fixed the problem, along with a new fuel filter and new rubber line on either side of the filter. Runs beautifully, without the fuel starvation caused by the collapsing fuel line at speed. The filter looked like crap, too. Starts right up now!
What kinda pissed me off about the line was that I needed an adapter or a new fitting at the carb to accept the line fitting. After a couple of hours driving around town with a new Edlebrock carb fitting and the new line with its fitting, and having ZERO luck with auto parts stores, a hydraulic line store, and a couple of hardware stores in finding a union for the two, my local O'Reillys came through in a matter of minutes! Holy Crap, was I relived to find someone who knew how to use a parts book when needed, and knew what I wanted. All in all, a good day.
Yeah, I know, simple ****...but it's nice when things come together and a knowledgeable parts guy knows what to look for.
