Hey everyone. I just signed up today. I just picked up a 73 charger with a 318 and 727 for $850. The car needs a complete restoration but is structurally solid, just missing a lot of parts. The distributor and all accessories are missing and I have a distributor in the mail. I'm very confused how it's supposed to be wired in. I know there is an ignition control module and a ballast resistor on the fire wall. Are these necessary to make the car run? And if so, what wires go from the distributor to the coil, the ignition control unit, resistor, 12 volt power, ground and so on? Thanks, and glad to be part of the forum!

Welcome to the site .
Yes everythingyou mentioned is necessary.
Lets see some pics and we will help you out.
Also are you 100% sure it's a 727 trans? Was it added because most 318's didn't come with a 727 in 73-74 models I'd have to look but I don't think any came with them but agen I have to take a look .

Trailer towing packages often included the 727 even with small engines.

I would highly recommend you get yourself a factory service manual in the mail as well

I'm pretty sure it's a 727, but I'll have to look closer. Thanks for the wiring info scooby. What would I do if I have the 4 pin module? And hopefully I can get some pictures up tonight!

I found out the car has a 904 transmission. Also, I got the distributor and coil in yesterday. Which way should the vacuum advance diaphragm be pointed? I have it pointed toward the passenger side of the engine. Also, would purpose does the ignition control module serve? Is it necessary for the car to have spark? I can't figure out exactly how it is wired in by looking at the diagram. Basically I'm just looking for which terminals need power and ground so I can jump them accordingly and see if the engine runs. I want to know if it's a healthy engine before putting any more parts into the 318 and unfortunately there is no engine bay wiring yet. Thanks for any help!

I have mine facing the passenger side. The ignition control module relies on the car battery to provide the 'spark' that sets the ignition system in motion. So yes, you need one. You should just be able to see if you can get it crank by using the starter on the battery. As for running, is the distributor points? or electronic?

Also, welcome to FBBO, I have a 1973 charger as well! Would love to see pictures.

It's electronic ignition. Do you happen to know what pins on the module connect to the distributor, coil, power, and ground? And I'll post some pictures of it soon, can I post directly to the site or do I need to host them somewhere?

You should be able to post directly through FBBO, click the add image on the textbox next to the film reel while replying.

Here's the wiring diagram for electronic iginitions

Thanks mopar-charger that's exactly what I was looking to find. I'll post pictures of it when I get home. And thanks super-bee_ski, everyone seems very friendly and helpful!

Here's some pictures, doesn't look like much now but it's actually a very solid car. I can't wait to get it running and driving!

Good looking project.
With the help of that diagram you should have it running in no time.
Is the gauge cluster still installed because the volt /amp gauge needs to be hooked up to completetrue current. Or just put a bolt and nut between the two wires and complete the connection that way

Unfortunately there is no gauge cluster. I'll be looking for one. Which circuit would need the bolt between it?

That'll be really helpful considering I don't have any engine bay wiring haha. I did get the car running though based off one of the other diagrams, and it runs great!

Congrats on the sweet find! Nothing like bringing another Charger back to life. Welcome to the site.

Thanks, I'm really excited to get it driving! Should be moving under its own power next week.
