Hello to everyone in the forum. I am Eric and getting a crash course on cars as I try to put together a 1970 plymouth roadrunner. Would anyone have recommendations on what to use for breaking in the engine? I bought the valvoline oil for breaking in the engine. I would appreciate any feed back.

Welcome. Nice oil bottle...We want to see some pictures of your car, please.

Welcome from Alabama, I have broken in several basically stock rebuilds with the VR1 racing oil, and that's also what I run in them. Some cam manufacturers have recommended a cam break in oil be poured across the length of the cam before the valley pan and intake are installed. It's been some years since I saw that in print, but if you built the engine there should have been recommendations for break in. If someone built the engine for you, that's the go to person to answer your questions.

Welcome to FBBO from NorCal Sierras

this is the welcome wagon not really a tech Q&A section
there's lots of threads on the very subject & lots of opinions too

if it's a flat tappit hydraulic lifter or a flat tappit solid lifter
I'd use a break-in oil with a higher zinc counts 'ZDDP of 1200 ppm min.'
do the proper warm up & break-in procedures
2,000-2,500-ish RPMs on a *high idle, for like 15-20 min.s
do it outside have a hose handy,
maybe cap off at 1st when the thermostat opens
so if it gets hot
make sure no air in the system, close it back up
run it to get the full heat-cycles thru the engine, constant *high idle
after that
then let it completely cool down, 'all the way' after
And also
after initial camshaft break-in,
or during break in procedures if done incorrectly
1st times driving it, don't drive it at a constant RPM
for about 250-500 or so mile after
keep it varied, not at a steady RPM, that will help too
Then change the break-in oil at like 1,500 or so miles
to what you're going to use all the time,
if it's a Flat tappet make sure that it has ZDDP in it too

lots of horror stories about camshafts going bad

that's what I've done my whole time around these cars
never had any issues with cams going bad

good luck
