I have a 69 charger with a 383 and just installed a new pertronix plug and play billet distributor with Ignitor 3 setup and an FlameThrower III coil. "Plug and Play" is not really the case on a 69 since to install the upgrade you have to convert from the old voltage regulator to a 1970 version which then need a new dual field alternator. Ended up being a bit more money than I had anticipated (when does it not) and a lot more work since you have to combine about 5 wires into one that attaches to the new voltage regulator and run a new wire from the new alternator to the negative side of the voltage regulator. Mounting the new regulator was a little tricky since I was scared to death to start drilling new holes in my firewall but it was needed. I used a 500 degree non adhesive repair tape to re-wrap my wiring harness with the new wire and the others I replaced since the wires that lie across the intake manifold were super crispy from years of heat. After installing the my second alternator (first one was bad out of the box) I hooked everything up and prayed. It was amazing! Once we re-timed the car we took her for a drive and what a difference!! The response time was so much better. This would have been REALLY easy had I already had the upgraded charging system or a 70+ Charger but the result is tremendous and I'd definitely recommend the upgrade. Cost me $320 for the distributor and coil from Summit and $80 for the new alternator and voltage regulator from my local auto parts store along with the small cost of new wire and connectors and tape. I'll put some links to the parts I used. Hope this helps anyone else trying to convert. I'll take some pics and add them as soon as I can!!

If I'm not mistaken I think all you really needed was the newer style electronic voltage regulator for a 69. Those are the solid state kind and not the old point style. Yea I no, I made the same mistake 4 years ago.

True, but to do that you need a dual field alternator and the 69 has a single field. The new voltage regulator is controlled with the negative field where the old system just controlled by shutting off the positive field via points. Think that's why anyways. Haha

That would have been nice. Nice alternative to the 70 style regulator.

I just bought a Pertronix billet Ignitor III distributor and FlameThrower III coil to swap in my 440 '69 coronet with a stock points dizzy. After reading the post I contacted Pertronix tech line and was told it didn't matter what VR I had in my car as long as 12V got to the coil. So now I'm confused. What would happen with the points type VR and the Pertronix? And for reference, how could I tell by looking at the VR if the previous owner had upgraded to a EI VR?

I just looked my VR on RockAuto - definitely have the pre-70 version.

I switched about 2-3 years in my 383 to the mentioned Pertronix billet distributor with the FT 3 coil, no ballast resistor should be used.

Other than that I switched to the electronic VR mentioned for the single field terminal alternator.

The old points style VR is IMHO something that I don't want to have in my car anyway.

How do you tell the difference between a single field and a double field alternator? I bought a old style rebuilt alternator( not the square back type). Can I use an electronic voltage regulator with it?....................................MO

All alternators are single field winding, but the older type has one field terminal (the other one is internally grounded in the case), while the newer has 2 field terminals.

The newer style alternators don't have one end of the field winding grounded internally, it's brought out to a second field terminal.

I.e. the old alternator has 1 field terminal + the battery terminal (total 2), the newer one has 2 field terminals + the battery terminal (total 3).

You can use electronic voltage regulators with both types, but you cannot switch them, they are different types and you have to make sure you've got the correct type electronic regulator for your alternator.

... boys you only need 12 V for the Pertronix Dizzy. Simple way to do this...run the wire from the ign. switch to a relay, this relay should run full 12 V direct from the Batt to the Distributor. The VR has nothing to do with the Pertronix, if you use the Relay you are fine,
