I think my starter went out on my '68 GTX but haven't had time to fully test to confirm. Assuming it is the starter, does anyone know where you can buy a restored original starter or a reproduction? The one on the car now is a mopar starter but doesn't look to be original so I'm not going to have it redone. I figured if I'm going to have to spend money for a new one, though, I may as well buy a correct one. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Easy way to tell if it is original or not...The motor cover will have a PN and date. The aluminum housing will also have a PN, date, and Chrysler logo....

If you are looking for a PN's and date code unit in 68-70...Good luck they are hard to find good ones to restore. If your looking for a correct looking. working starter and dates/pn's do not matter...I have a 70 unit from a running car but will need to be cleaned up. All this can be done at home....

Thanks guys.

MoparNation - I'll have to double check the part numbers on mine this evening. There's a pentastar on the aluminum housing but I can't read the part number in the picture I took. On the motor cover there's a white number stamped but I didn't see the part number I was looking for. I was comparing what I have against some pictures I came across of the starter from an original unrestored '68 GTX. Based on not finding the part numbers I expected and the screw on the motor cover looking different I'm assuming I have a later mopar starter on mine.

I don't care much about the dates, but the correct look would be nice. I'll check out what I have and then let you know about the one you have. That might work perfectly. Usually once I discover something isn't correct, I try to find the correct piece when it comes time to replace it. I try not too carried away with the dates as it's not a hemi or anything, though.

Thanks!

No problem...Shoot me via pm some pics of your starter....

If you do want the one I have I am not going to want a lot for it...

MP74 -

For some reason it doesn't look like I can upload photos in a PM, so I'm going to post here. This is my starter:

And here is the link to a pic I found of a starter from the unrestored GTX:

I can't make out the part number on mine, but there are enough differences between what I have and the original in the Hot Rod photo that I think mine must be a later version. Let me know what you think though. Feel free to shoot me a PM on that and also what you're thinking on your starter. Thanks!
