new today! 68 dodge coronet , 318, 4 barrel, 4 speed

This car was an automatic. Steering column has up and down excessive movement. Indicater was removed . Could there be an additional part needed or missing to cause this?

If it has side play in the column the upper bearing is the problem. The snap ring on the steering shaft and retainer plate may be missing allowing the bearing to work up and out of the housing or the bearing is just shot. If the whole column is moving up and down check the retaining bolts under the dash
