NHRA Pomona Stock Eliminator Won By A 4 Speed '70 Road Runner

I don't get how the trans stays together with that kinda shifting... seems smooth though, and i'm betting the preloading is to take out any variation in the shift time, keep it consistent
In that class can a racer use an aftermarket transmission? A buddy of mine runs a Jerico drag race 4 speed in his NSS class....rode with him in the race car once and it looked like he was pulling on the shifter well before shift time but the shifter handle wasn't moving.

I think most of the drag race boxes use faceplated (dog ring) gears. I put them in my 23 spline 833, and they seem to have a back angle on them that is supposed to hold them in gear.
My understanding is that clutchless transmissions aren't back cut.
I do pull on my handle a little before hitting the clutch.
I know guys that have face plated G-forces that are not supposed to be clutchless, but they shift without the clutch.

Wish i could convert my car to a stick... too much work :)
Oh man, I haven't had enough stick cars in my life!!! The only stick car in my life now is an original /6 64 Dart with 3 on the tree and well, it shifts pretty good but not trying to power shift it even though it'll shift pretty fast. I used to hang up Chevy's of the mid 60's just trying to shift some what quickly lol. Those dang things sucked BIG time and is one of the things that turned me off to owning GM junk. Got tired of 'unsticking' the column shifters with those....and the next thing was wheel hopping early Camaros and the list goes on!

Interesting the way he preloads the shifter before every shift.
I read an article where Ronnie Sox described that, he said that under full power you could pull quite hard and not pop out of gear, then quickly depressing and releasing the clutch let the lever snap into the next gear.

I saw the post on Facebook and watched the videos, pretty cool he won. I know a buddy who competes in the FAST races runs a faceplated A833 in his Challenger.

Makes sense but never tried it that way. I usually just 'yanked' the shifter whenever it was time to shift, I just 'yanked' it and was there. A good clutch and shifter along with a good transmission worked well. In the late 70's my room mate 'power shifted' my 56 Chevy with a 3 speed hooked up backwards and got reverse lol. Neither one of us knew what happened until after a few seconds when the wheels were spinning and the car nosed over. Couldn't believe it didn't break stuff! That was nuts!

There are some videos out there of Grumpy Jenkins shifting back in the day. To me it looked like instead of preloading the shifter, he timed it so he yanked on it at just the right time.
He was right up there with the best.
