I've been scouring my new(to me) 440 engine and can't find the numbers. I've looked on the pad opposite the distributor and I don't see any engraving. I found an RB stamp on the front passenger side of block and a blank flat plate on the passenger side of the block and nothing on the driver side. I'll get another look tomorrow, probably just missed it. But am I looking in the right places? It's supposed to be a 440 from a motor home. I would guess early to mid 70's

I had to spay paint the pad then sand it to read the #, passenger side of block under the head/ exhaust manifold was where the others are located on mine. Yours should be close.

either warranty block or someone grinded them down I think

Well this is disappointing. My 440 for $200 turns out to be a 1963 413. At least thats what I can find online. Not sure.if I want to proceed with this in my 67 Charger

Or go back to the guy that sold it to you.....

Is it not worth building? My knowledge of 413's is I know they exist

Pistons are the problem if it needs new ones and finding them and then getting them for a reasonable cost. The 413 has the smallest bore of all the RB blocks so using a larger valve with a higher lift cam may get into the cylinder wall. It does have the same stroke as all the RB's so if you need a crank, that shouldn't be a problem. Tear it down and see what it's going to need and go from there. I'm sure the heads on it are going to have small valves plus they may have the high mount water pump setup. If it has those, you may as well start looking for heads too. Can you post a pic of the water pump setup? Also, the intake might also be wet?

I've torn a little off today, but I'd say it's a high water pump setup.

Yup....it has the high mount pump which you don't want to use on car. Notice that is has ports going into the heads from the pump housing.

Thanks for the info. The guy will take it back, but I'm not sure if it's worth the trouble. He's about 30 miles away. I'm going to try and sell it or trade it for something of value to me.

Hughes has cast pistons for under $400 (ouch)
My engine is a '63 car engine. Disassembled it, sent the block out for cleaning and they found two hair line cracks between the frost plugs. ( from freezing at some point) I'm not going to fool with it now. I have plenty of stock parts!

I'd take it back to the seller if he's willing to make it right.

The 413 was used into the mid 70's in the Travco motor home and industrial applications, T 413 would be 1975..

The chart I found said '63. It also had points distributor. Did they still use points on motor homes in '75?

Performance cars went to electronic in 72 while the rest of them switched over in 73 but I'm not sure about the trucks etc but never did see any mid 70's motor homes with a points distributor and I've worked on a few.....

After putting the motor on Craiglist, I've actually got a couple of people interested. One wants to trade a 440 that needs rebuilding, the other has a short shaft A-833 4 speed or a 3:91 sure grip to trade. I don't know any more than that on either set up, except that I know the guy with the 440 and if anything was wrong, he'd make it right. The other guy says I'm making a bad move on the 440 because, in his words:
"Once a 440 is punched, you have a difficult time keeping it cool... Also if it's a pre 1974, the 440 won't have the reinforcing ribs and is prone to cracking under stress"
The trans and rear end would not be used on the car, only to trade or resell. The 440 would be rebuilt and put in the car.
Thoughts?

There would be a lot of 440 heating problems on this site if all bored 440 were prom to overheating. If bored 60 over and you are not will to sleeve it make darn sure he knows the mileage since it was bored or you just bought a wine rack.
