Still have no oil pressure when priming. Is there a procedure. I pulled the oil pump and it seems fine. I kjnow my pick up tube is on. Does oil have to go through the crank to get up top. The next step is to buy a new pump

Oil is fed to the lifter gallery first and that feeds to the mains, cam etc. Do you have a gauge on it or are you just not getting any oil to the rockers? You may need to rotate the engine as you prime to see oil coming up to the rockers....

are you going in the right direction. is this a big block? big blocks go counter clockwise.

we using an electric drill turning counterclockwise through the distributor hole to the pump

Should i rotate the engine by turning the key or by hand. We tried both. NO OIL HAS REACHED THE ROCKERS. Somebody told me to pack the oil pump with vaseline since it needs to prime.

oil pressure reads 0. I even took the pressure gauge off for a while to see if I am air bound. No oil any were. I am still told oil goes through the # 4 cam hole and cranking the engine over is the only way to get oil up there. W hat do you guys think about taking the oil pump off and packing the gears with vaseline stick it in a bucket of oil,run it slow till i get some resistance with the drill and bolt it back up to the engine. Some one told me i need to prime that pump before i bolt it to the car.

I coat the pump parts with a light coating of grease before installing it and that's it and you are correct about oil feeding the heads through the cam but your gauge will read pressure even if the heads are not getting any oil. Sounds like maybe your pump hasn't pulled any oil up yet or a galley plug was left out.

I filled mine full of STP before installing it just for this reason...

I like to open any new pump to check for rotor end clearance. I rebuilt a brand new rebuilt 340 because the pump only had .001" clearance and it seized up shearing the intermediate shaft. The engine continues to run but there's no blood being pumped....

Thanks. I will try that. I have been working on this thing since 10 am. I will get back at it tomorrow. Thanks. I will let you know. One more thing. Does anybody out there think I should not go any further till get oil pressure. I checked my pump for the proper clearances before assembly. Thanks cranky.

What all do you have left to do?

Or if the filter is dry, put some oil in it and put it back on.....

Cranky. I put some oil in the filter earlier but some of it pours out when installing it due to shoehorning it in there ( that did not work ). I did not yet try to crack the filter like wannadrag says but he might be on to something with that air locked thing. I always said this is a pickup priming issue because it moved so free. Well I could not wait- cracked the filter ran the drill and no pressure. looks like i will pack that pump tomorrow. Thanks.

Don't do anything else till you get oil pressure! You don't need to tour over the engine to get the pump to prime. A little Lubriplate put in the pump will help it prime. You shouldn't have to "pack it". Once it takes a prime you will know it because it will get hard to turn or in your case, load down the drill motor. Once you get it primed then you can turn the crank to get oil up to the top end.

Update. THANK GOD IVE GOT PRESSURE. Bought a high volume pump. Filled the filter with regular oil, screwed it on the pump, filled the pump with 90 weight oil and bolted it to the car. Within 10 seconds had 80 psi. at the oil gauge. My old pump probably is not bad but I am not changing that thing again.THANKS TO EVERYONE.
