No power question...

Car: 64 Plymouth Sport Fury
Problem:
Have no electrical power when ignition switch is turned on (no gauge movement or oil pressure light when in run and start position).
No headlights
Does not crank in start position.
When I jump connections on starter relay to starter/solenoid nothing happens
It's as if there was no battery in the car.

HAVE fully charged battery
HAVE Power to starter relay and to the starter
HAVE Power from starter relay to bulkhead connector

Still have the original amp meter installed in the system (haven't pulled the dash yet to bypass it).

I've looked for a fuseable link but none appears to exist.

Recent additions to the electrical system...electronic ignition module, electronic voltage regulator, newer style alternator (two wire field). Car's been running fine with the additions then suddenly power failure.

If jumping the relay does nothing, it seems that it must be a battery connection issue. Take off all cables and connections and clean them shiny and go from there.

Check the grounds (battery to block & block to firewall). Also check the battery cables into their clamps as they can come loose or corroded. There may be a fusible link between the starter and the relay that could be blown if your pos battery cable goes directly to the starter.

Sure sounds like no ground to me.

Pretty sure Shorthorse is right...no fusible link on a 64. Not on 64 wiring diagrams, either. Not that one couldn't be added though, I've got two on my 64's parallel wiring job.

Ground...might also check the ignition switch itself.

It was a ground....
I chased the power for two days....had power everywhere the wiring diagram said it was supposed to be. But the headlights would not come on, the ignition switch would not engage the starter relay/starter and when I jumped the power terminal to the solenoid terminal on the starter relay nothing would happen.

It ended up being the cable end that was grounded to the engine via the ac bracket....puzzling thing about this is the ground point had worked for months....cleaned up the ends and reconnected and nothing. Then moved the ground cable end from the bracket to a spot on the cylinder head....instantly solved the problem.

One thing to note when checking for power I would ground the meter to the engine block and not to the ground point at the ac bracket. The engine block ground was giving me good readings but I didn't check the grounding point i was using on the bracket (if this makes sense the way I've explained).

Can never predict what these old cars will do (or not do). Anyway it's fixed and everyone who posted said it was a ground and they were all right. Thanks guys!
