No start issue

carb was purchased brand new, although it does seem like its squirting quite a bit of fuel into the manifold.. flooding could certainly be something to dig deeper into.. I will pull the plugs.. also yes orange box, but if im getting spark on all cylinders I figured the ecu wouldn't be a factor..
So you have done some great checks....

I too am leaning to a fuel issue......Pour some fuel into the carb/manifold and fire it up.....

maybe I should go down a size or two on the jetting? It looks like its really dumping a lot of fuel, not really a smooth stream..

You said you checked the firing order. You did not mention the rotation. Make sure you have the firing order in the right direction.

Also, what do you mean by ‘pointed at no 1’? Do you mean rotor is pointed at no 1 plug wire on cap when installed or do you mean pointed at no1 cylinder?

Maybe some pictures would help. Take some shots of the the distributor area.

yes, big block, counterclockwise and I meant both. the rotor points at the number 1 cylinder and from there I put the distributor cap back on and then made the firing order with the plug wires from there, with 1 right about under the rotor. then 8436572 going counterclockwise. and as for pics, I will upload some in a bit, had to step out from the garage for a while. my head was spinning LOL

Maybe your floats are stuck and dumping way more fuel than normal? Pull the plugs & put in a new set. You shouldn’t be seeing any fuel other than acc. pump shot when trying to start.

also, just remembered Holley carb is a street avenger, off the shelf from the parts store.. if its relevant

that's what I was thinking, I am leaning towards timing or distributor but considering all options

I would take a LOT of extra fuel to keep it from firing on the first attempts.

“Dad” it’s all kinda relative. Timing off a little, hyd.lifters not pumped up yet; solid lifters not set right.

My timing was hand set somewhere close to TDC without much care. You can also hear one of mine hydraulics wasn't cooperating.. lol.

It's already been mentioned, but, back to basics...initial timing. Why are you trying to set it at '0' TDC??

Most, even with a bigger cam, starts at 10, or more degrees before TDC. Getting dangerous here, assuming the dampner markings are correct. #1 piston TDC compression stroke, should be at 0...then, by hand rotate the engine past 10 degrees, back in normal rotation to 10 degrees. THEN stab your distributor. Where ever the rotor points, should be 'just coming to' #1 plug wire, not directly at it. Rotation is CCW...distributor fires off, as it comes to the cap #1 location.

update: SHE RUNS!! pulled the distributor and moved the distributor gear a few teeth, re installed and she fired right up! thanks all for the comments and help, happy 2019!!
