Sorry guys, I know this is a common thread on here. But I think my situation might be a little different and maybe someone can help me out...I’m still learning and don’t know much.

My headlights work fine when the car is off. Open, hold open, close. Works perfect. However, when I turn the car on they stop functioning. At least dependably. For the most part they won’t do anything, or they’ll spin half open and stop. Rarely, they’ll work how they’re supposed to after pulling the switch 20 times. I have a new alternator and the charging systems seems to be fine as the car never dies and always starts right up. Any thoughts?

Thanks for any advice you can offer,
Brian

Check the wires in the bulkhead connector.. Look for loose and or burn wiring. Something might be jiggling loose when the engine is vibrating.

Do you have a voltmeter? Not to sound like a dick, but there's lots of electrical questions on here by folks who do not have a test meter. Harbor Freight, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, etc. They all have inexpensive multimeters on the shelf.

What BeepBeep said - all these cars have 50+/- yr old wiring, and it wasn't designed to last this long. Check the grounds - usually either too much rust or too much paint if it was freshly painted.

Thanks guys! I never would have thought about the engine vibrating it enough to break contact. I’ll look there. And yes haha I have a meter. The question is...do I know how to use it well.? I’m still learning- but what should I do with it? Check voltage to the headlights? All the wiring in the car is new by the way.

Not to hijack but if your going to chase electrical problems, a Power Probe 3 is what you want.
