Not too happy with AMD

AMD quarters

securedownload117.jpg107.jpg

AMD is the best on the market for sure. I most recently did a full trunk floor extensions and both full quarters on a 69 Road Runner. Fit was real good, however not perfect. As with anything a little rework is needed. The quarters did need some light body work as they looked similar to the roof skin pictured. The passenger side for some reason was much worse. The end product is awesome, just took a few extra steps to achieve the finish I wanted.

I hate it for your roof, but I used AMD interior and trunk pans (63 Fury), plus the quarter patch panels as soon as they hit the market, the quality was top notch, I hate to think what I would have had to do to use old metal for the pans.

If it was mine,I would be cutting that
Roof back off and I would be starting over..

Yeah, Im too late for that. Body work on the roof is done. Getting ready for paint soon.

Just wondering, who did talk to at AMD and who did you buy your parts from?

I just received an email from AMD stating ..."John,

Thanks for the photos,

I have taken a look at another skin I have here and it looks like what you have there,
I am contacting my manufacturer and letting them know about the complaints.

Let me know if you need anything else on this one,

Thanks"

Wow! no quality checks of the parts they ship to suppliers/customers?

Not sure I like the response that seems to indicate they didn't know what they were shipping.

We had good luck with floors on Marc's 68 Charger. Quality control is on AMD. A replacement is on AMD,or a refund for full price.:eusa_think:

We're lucky that these pieces are being reproduced, period. I don't think it's Hit of Miss in terms of QC from AMD, and, coming from China doesn't mean it's junk per se. A skilled craftsman can do wonders with these panels. All of them need to be tweaked to fit, and fit to tweak. I think that many guys' skill sets are lacking to undertake this sort of repair -- in their garage with minimal tools and aforementioned skills, and you get a lot of bitching and complaining that this piece is junk and won't fit. Let me tell you that the Factory put filler in panels when the car was built to get it down line and out the door. How do I know this? I've media blasted a lot of cars' orginal paint off and found filler over ill-fitted panels. I've installed a handful of AMD panels on a few cars, and, yes there are issues, but, not that I have to call AMD and complain. Notice how the box the panel was shipped in says something like panels will require fit and fitting to make them go on properly. I'm glad AMD is making good stuff, glad they're there.

Donny, well said. I have personally been to Taiwan where this panels are stamped and know the owners at AMD. If any one does a good job it is these guys

I have a lot of detail and even pictures of the process in Taiwan. I also brought metal samples back of the steel for grade and content. But that's a whole different post.

A little side-tracked, kinda-sorta. Still AMD stuff, though. Really figures stuff made over-seas.

Anybody try their valve covers? Ordered a set from Mancini. Told not before January 15, before they got 'em from AMD. Still nothing. Suppose any day now.

I bought a set of AMD big block valve covers from Classic Industries and was not impressed. They did not sit flat on the heads, had sharp edges and wrinkles. It was easier and cheaper to rework my beat up originals. I returned them to CI for a refund, no problem. I hope you have better luck.

Thanks for that, Mike!

I'll have to take it as it comes. Might even see the damn things this coming week...only been since before xmas when I ordered 'em.
Still flat don't believe what the old boy at Mancini told me. I brought up the subject of why in the hell us dumb Americans couldn't make our own stuff??? He said, if made here, they would cost up to $500 a set!
Unreal.

Got two sets...used, abused, and too rusted to mess with.

Let us know how they look when you get them. My experience may not have been typical. The guy from CI that I talked to seemed surprised that I was not happy with them. The deal breaker for me was the flatness. If I did not have my originals that were in fair condition, I would not have returned the AMD covers.

lol..... if only they could put some "flatness" into that roof skin

I'm about to make a decision about replacing both rear quarter panels on my 67 Satellite. I can order pre-fab panels from Year One or Summit or any of the vendors that provide the after market parts and get them welded on, hoping for a good fit or I can go to the AMD installation center in Cleveland, GA (which is the town where the car is now for the interior work) and get them to install AMD quarter panels. Based on what I'm reading here, it sounds like AMD is the way to go--right?

I didn't think AMD make 67 quarter panels other than the small patch panels?

I'll let you know what I find out--I'm being steered to them by a couple people who know the guys at the installation center and I'm about to call them to discuss it. They will probably have to see the car before anything is decided. Could be this is a combination of someone else's parts and their installation. I'm not sure yet--I've gotten two different sets of input mentioning the same end source and haven't spoken to the "horse" yet if you know what I mean.

I try to subscribe to the theory if can't say anything good, say nothing at all.....however don't go there! Two bad experiences and I know of others.
