My 66 Charger with a 383HP engine was purchased new in CA and has a Carter 4 barrel with I believe an aftermarket 4133S CAB carb and a green nox device I believe mounted on the rear of the manifold. I recently rebuilt the carb and found a metal tag under the carb brass identification tag indicating it's a CAB carb. However the idle screws had previously been removed all the way out which defeated the lead plugs if you know what those look like. What I would like to know is if the green nox device is stock. I believe I saw a reference that the original carb would have been a 3855S. Also would it be a good idea to remove the green device and plug the vacuum connection? I believe the device was installed back then to retard the vacuum at some point but I'm not sure whether it affects the timing. If anyone knows more about this I would sure like the info. I want to make the car as stock as possible and maybe this device was installed later in the 6o's or early 70's to meet CA smog testing. The hose connects to the front left port on the carb.
Yes CA is different. In sooo many bad ways dealing with the California Air Resource Board (CARB) who have outlived their usefulness. I lived thru the bad smog years in the 60's and they were beneficial in making changes but now they just cost us more money. A bottle of Nitrous Oxide might help make the Charger operate like it looks. FAST!!!
Yes it's an auto and good to know. Before the rebuild and after I have been having problems with adjusting the choke. It's either too much tension to pull off after warm up or not enough to keep it running when cold. Put a new Carter manifold pull off in as well. I will keep tinkering with it but thought maybe it was because the carb was not original. Being original now makes me think it might have had the green device from the factory. But would it run better w/o it? May have to experiment with that if I don't get more info on this forum.
