Anyone here interested in NASCAR? I would like to know your opinions about Richard Childress bringing back the iconic #3. I want to see if I'm the only one who has his stomach in a knot over this.

I think it's time. After all, Childress owns the number and the fact he's giving it to his grandson makes sense. He wouldn't let just anyone have it.

Ditto. He pays for that number so he can decide what to do with it.

Most drivers they hand their number right back out to someone pretty quick. I think waiting this long they have paid great respect to Dale.....

Now with that said if the King dies and they want to retire his number then something is wrong.

The owners do not own the numbers, NASCAR owns the numbers. It's the driver that makes the number a household name. If the driver has done an iconic business with that number for nascar, they should retire that number out of respect for any driver.

it is just a number ....what do YOU remember more, the man and his accomplishments or his number? i am not saying they would not be thought of simultaneously but I am not even going to consider the number when thinking of the talent and accomplishment.

Just my opinion but I think this whole retiring the number of some player has kind gotten out of hand in most sports. I'm not a big pro baseball or NBA fan anymore but sometimes I'll hear that a team is retiring some players number and I'm like "who?"
I personally think that it's more of a tribute that someone would want to wear a famous number rather than retire it, especially in NASCAR. I would rather see the 3 and 43 out running on the track. JMHO.

Yeah, but a driver would need asbestos clothes to drive the track with 43 and not be winning all the time. :)

Meh. Tragic as his death was, Earnhardt was as dirty as they come. I could give a **** either way though, as i dont bother with nascar anymore.

I'm kind of like "Mar" on this one....
1. NASCAR has gone "Coporate", too big for the little guy (Remember Alan Dennis Kulwicki ,December 14, 1954 – April 1, 1993 nicknamed "Special K" and the "Polish Prince") Last driver to Win the Cup on his own!
2. NASCARs laws: It's OK for a Veteran driver to "bump" the rookie, BUT GOD FORBID the rookie bumps the Veteran!
3. NASCAR seems to change its rules every week.

Nope, its gone too Coporate for me, Team owners have 2 and 3 cars , how can you beat that?

Let the number 3 ride!
In my opinion, i respect yours and others, this is just my opinion.

PS: Dodge pulled out of NASCAR, nuff said!

I thought you were the polish prince, ski!!??

yep, when Dodge pulled out, that was my last straw.

Richard quit winning with that number a long time ago.....

Your an idiot,he was a bare knuckles driver that raced a STOCK CAR the way they were meant to be raced. That was when the field wasn't so full of candy asses!!!!

Earnhardt came from a different era and that's the way many of them drove....he was just more 'into' that kind of driving but I'd rather watch someone that's aggressive and makes contact than watch the likes of cry baby Kyle doing his underhanded deeds.

Also, I rather see the number come back than put up on a shelf. What better way to remember who used to run it no matter who had it before.

And I don't watch stock car racing like I used to because of all the pansy drivers and the way NASCAR runs their corp bs.

That's his opinion and is entitled to it. Don't be an idiot by calling other members an idiot.....

Ha Ha...funny!
Yup, so wasnt Cale Yarborough, Bobby Allison Sr, Donny Allison, Harry Waltrip, Junior Johnson, "Fast-Freddie" Lorenzo, The "Wood's"Brothers, Bobby Baker, Curly Baker, Gary Bettenhausen, Ned Jarrett, David Pearson....on and on...!

Point is, he was good but others were and are good too!
It's the FANS who help make the charisma and charm of the drivers!
So, they ALL were "bare knuckles drivers" in that ERA.
Hell, before Earnhardt they didnt have power steering!

The number belongs to Richard Childress. He races the #3 himself as a driver for years so I don't know what the big deal is about a number. I went to the Talladega Busch race a few years ago when Junior used the #3 in a race & fans there acted like his dad was driving the car. Give me a break. Lots of Nascar fans will not listen when I tell them that Earnhardt Sr. raced Fords, Pontiacs, & yes even a Dodge in his early years. He won his 1st championship with a different number also. I know for sure he raced the #15 and the #2 before re-uniting with Childress. The only Nascar # that I consider sacred is the Kings #43 but others may disagree with me on that.

I feel like Im at a Nascar race now!!! Whoo-hoo go #3, push down on the long pedal. Its just a number. We all have them. phone numbers, Social security numbers,& if we want we can even put a number on our daily driver car. What is it with some fans? I am not a fan of Jeff Gordon but he has had a better career in a shorter amount of time than Earnhardt had. But wait fans think he is a sissy boy. But they think Junior is a mans man. Makes me think, Gordon has had 2 beautiful wives but I have never seen Junior with any females other than his sister. Hmmmm
