Occasional clunking in the back end

I have an 8.75 rear end with a 3.55 SG. It was rebuilt by a top-notch rear-end guy nearby about 300 miles ago. When I have the car out, and driving relatively straight for a while, then stop and make a left turn, I sometimes hear a clunking from the back of the car. I'm hoping it's not the rear end. Could it be something in the rear drums? Anyone have this happen?

Your luck is better than mine, i had a pig fully rebuilt, from day 1 it clank and clank i thought it was a pos, after doing some resurch, its normal, the clutches are tight, did you add some sure-grip additive, 1 bottle, i put in an extra bottle it did go away, hope this helps you out.

Yup. And there are no leaks from the diff. I may call the guy who rebuilt it tomorrow, and see what he says.

Find yourself an empty parking lot, and do some slow figure eights, ten or so, and see it it goes away.

Spider gear worn out? Had it happen in a high mileage rear end once. It got worse over time until the rear end started trying to lock up....

Had an 64 Olds with posi felt like you went over a curb went it clunked. Went 120k like that, whale oil additive helped some.

Nope we build the right way.

check the shackle bushings you may have one wearing out

Had trouble with a front U joint that did the same.
Unfortunately I didn't diagnose it correctly and ended up opening up and ruining a 5 speed transmission - yes, was younger.
Discovered bad u joint after removing the 5 speed.

Good advice. I called the rear end dude... he said the same thing. Because the car has sat idle for a couple years while I was rebuilding it, the guts have dried out, and I need to skate a dozen or so figure-eights. Thanks IMP!

Assuming it’s not the differential, I’d check the trunk, exhaust, and fuel tank.
I’ve had it where it’s all three

once exhaust was hitting shocks going over bumps
Another time fuel tank straps were a bit loose
And a few weeks ago the trunk kept clunking since a rubber grommet fell off, replaced it and noise gone

Glad I found this thread. i also just put a newly built sure grip third member in and I’m experiencing the same issue. I was getting worried because when I removed the old third member, three bolts that hold the ring gear on were missing from their holes. One actually fell out as I was removing the pumpkin. I made sure to wipe the inside of the diff case out, but I was getting paranoid that I missed some stray bolts rolling around. was happy to hear that this clunking can be somewhat normal and should work it’s way out

After the resto, my 8 3/4 started to clunk too..... I finally crawled under it and the u bolts were all loose.... OOPS.....
