Whats up with the new Ohio law? How will it affect the Mopar Nats.

The one if you caught even thinking about a whole shoot you could lose your car.

Heard about at mopar nats this year but don't think it has passed yet, There trying to sneek it thru, Want people to contact your representives and vote it down.

How can the cops tell what your thinking?Boy o' boy I'm going to Sing Sing if this passes!

The bill wasn't acted on, and not being acted on kills the bill. It would have to be broght up again in the House, pass the House and then come back for the Senate to vote on. The text of the law is at http://www.legislature.state.oh.us/analysis.cfm?ID=128_HB_191&hf=analyses128/h0191-i-128.htm. Parts of it:

The bill expands the definition of "street racing" to also include "any exhibition of speed or acceleration that is inconsistent with the normal operation of a vehicle on a public road, street, or highway." In addition, the bill provides that persons rendering assistance or encouragement in any form or manner to the defined competitive use of vehicles must be equally charged as participants (bill's additions to existing law are in italics). So, if I'm standing on Brice and tell somebody to light'em up and they do, they can be busted and me too. The bill really goes go down hard on street racers who injure somebody including forfeiture of your vehicle.

I have no problem with throwing true street racers in jail and taking their cars. Racing belongs on the track. I really have a problem when a chirp of a tire can be called "street racing" and get you a license suspension. But, as I said above, the bill is dead.

Sounds like a stupid republic of calif law...

If I remember correctly, the daughter of a prominent well-connected Columbus lawyer was sadly killed because of some A@# hole in a rice burner with a fart pipe. If I remember correctly, he was racing his buddy and lost it and crashed into and killed her.

Although very sad that this young girl lost her life because of morons, I can't stand laws being passed because of grief and morning. All that happens is the innocent get punished because of bad laws.

Since when is a street racer innocent? They put themselves, and the general public, in danger every time they run. If the law was narrowed to include only street racing and not "exhibitions of speed" that could be interpreted as a burnout I got no problem with it.

Greg, you miss understood what I was saying. The kid that was racing should be sent to prison as far as I'm concerned.
The innocent... is us! The government seems to like making laws to broaden laws that are already on the books. Like Drag Racing on the streets is Illegal!!! Always has been and always will be.
Why do we need to expand it so some innocent family man who happens to chirp 2nd gear get his car impounded because that “could be considered drag racing”.

Explained like that, I agree. I've got 3.54 gears and a Keisler tranny with steep first gear behind a nice 440+6. My tires are BFG TAs, not very sticky. It's hard NOT to chirp the tires! There goes my fun...

"In addition, the bill provides that persons rendering assistance or encouragement in any form or manner to the defined competitive use of vehicles must be equally charged as participants."
This part particularly bothers me. I see a Constitutional issue there. Free speech. Will I get busted for saying "Light 'em up"? That part WILL not pass the litmus test! Our legislators should actually be made to READ the Constitution! Before they make "knee-jerk, feel-good" laws.

I would like to think that they cant, period, come up with a law stating chirping tires means if caught you lose your car, But the way they make some of the idiot laws it really wouldn't surprise me now a days. I live in Pa. The laws in this state are getting out of hand and as I live on the Pa-Ohio border I drive in both states, hard enough keeping up with my own state laws. I do agree completely with gregs70 and anyone else who says street racing is wrong, just my 2 cents. Ron...

I believe the driver was drunk as well. But the focus was on the car, not the drunk driver...

The same law has already been in effect in Ontario the last couple of years.
http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/about/bill203.shtml

In Ontario, Canada with our RIDICULOUS "Street Racing" laws the cop is judge, jury and executioner on the spot! Your vehicle is impounded and even if you later prove your innocence you are still "on the hook" for towing and impound fees and you have had your licence suspended even if you later proved that you had done nothing wrong.

"Street racing" includes 2 or more vehicles accelerating or travelling very quickly together, 50kph over the speed limit even if you are by yourself, spinning or even chirping tires and wheelies on a motorcycle.

Canadian Constitution (same as with U.S.) indicates that a person is innocent until proven guilty... but this is NOT the case in Ontario today!
If any State tries to bring in similar legislation to this... FIGHT IT!!!

This is what I was trying to say. It’s a crime this happened and that kid needs to be put in prison (if he is still alive).
I wish they would just enforce the damn laws that are on already on the books. Drinking and driving is a crime… Enforce it. Street Racing is illegal… Enforce it. Why do they have to punish some poor 50-year-old guy or gal who let the clutch out too fast or cracks second gear and never went over the speed limit?

Not to change the subject but think about it this way. My daughter was telling me that they couldn’t draw a soldier with a gun or an Indian with a bow and arrow in school because of the zero tolerance laws.

How about the honor student who shot a plastic (spit) ball and was expelled from school and the school is going to bring charges against him because the spit ball shooter was considered a weapon which is in violation of the zero tolerance laws. This is BS!!!!

What happened to the poor girl is a crime. No matter what happens nothing will bring her back, and as much as we pray it never happens, we cannot stop it from happening again, not even these stupid laws.
