do you change your own oil and filter, or do you take to your local mechanic to have done?
pro's and con's.
 
Know it is done right. Curbside pick up of used oil here. Opportunity to inspect other stuff downstairs.
 
with the cost of do-it-yourself vs having a garage do it, seems more practical to take to garage. also, some folks may not have that "curbside pickup".
 
I do it myself on all vehicles, that way I know the drain plug will not come loose afterwards...... as it did once years ago when some grease monkey did it!

Same here. No one handles or cares for a vehicle like an owner does. No one touches my modern Mopar either for oil changes. Except me.
 
I personally know people that fried their engines because the drain plug was either over tightened and stripped out or not tightened up at all! Screw that crap.....and like said above, I get to look at other things while I'm under there.

Wear gloves. Anyone figure out how to keep the crossmember clean when spinning the filter, let me know. Tried bagging the filter, all kinds of stuff.
 
I pretty much do everything myself, I hate trusting work to people I don't know.
 
For anybody that likes to do it themselves look into the Fumoto drain valve. It goes in once. There is a spring loaded valve to turn when draining. No chance of ever stripping out. The whole unit is very compact.
 
Dennis H. Depends on location of the filter but you can punch a hole in it with a center punch and let it drain. I have my wife take her van in to get the oil changed cuz I'm too busy and it's cheaper to have it done. You just need to ask what filters and oil they are using.
 
I have a Fumoto valve on both new Hemis. Sweet. Got a magnetic on the 440.

Hey Dennis: Kind of involved, but you can take off the old filter without a mess and fill the new filter before spinning it on. Not for the factory resto crowd...

I just don't trust anyone else to do it properly. Do you think that some quick lube is going to fill the filter with oil or clean the filter mount or check anything else under the car? I could tell you several horror stories from people that came into our shop because they had their cars damaged by some idiot at a quickie lube place. Happens way too often for me.
 
I can buy oil & filter up here for $25...local shop charges $30 for oil, filter & lube service.....I'm on the wrong side of 60 and am to old and tired to be crawling around under the car changing oil....plus if I do, I have to take it somewhere to dump it....so the extra $5 I am charged at my local shop is worth it...

I have always done it myself because I have a real hard time trusting someone else to treat my car as their own. I have heard a few stories about the drain plug being rattle gunned on and stripped out.

Plus it is easy and rewarding to do it in the garage. I own 2 vehicles now, a 2003 Pathfinder and a 1962 Belvedere. Both are pretty darned easy. Mobil 1 + Wix filter for the Pathy and high zinc dino + Wix filter for the 318 Poly. Drop off old oil at Oreilly's
 
I change oil in all my cars I don't want someone else doing it especially to my Plymouth I just prefer to do it myself
