oil pressure relief spring and valve?

Can you simply take the oil pump off, and remove the relief spring and valve to check that they are not stuck, or is it better to just replace the whole oil pump?

there's a hex plug (early pumps have a square head) at the back of the pump that will unscrew off to let you get to the spring and relief valve.

Yeah! You don't have to pull the pump just the hex or square nut and pull the spring and relief valve!
