Oil recommendation

Bad topic to post. You will get a thousand opinions just like mine so pick your poison. I would just run a quality 10w-30 regular dino oil.

I've always just used dino 10W30 in my well varnished 383, rebuilt in 1978 for $300! But somewhere I got convinced to start spending my hard earned coin on Penngrade.

Yes I'm sure I would get a thousand opinions but thought I would ask. Didn't think about searching other threads
 
I've been using Lucas "hot rod" oil for a number of years. I would use either 10w-30 or 10w-40. Whatever oil you choose it needs to have zinc to keep the flat tappet cam lobes from getting worn off.

And yes, the color was green just as the GT-1 was for all those years. This oil was an instant success with drag racers, hot rodders and oval track racers (both dirt and asphalt) as well as vintage, muscle and classic car enthusiasts. With the unique Pennsylvania-grade base oil and the enhanced zinc and phosphorus (ZDDP) package, the original green oil was back and better than ever!

Then in 2015, D-A Lubricant Company, Inc. acquired the Brad Penn Finished Lubes division from ARG and shortened the name of its flagship product to PennGrade 1. It’s the same great oil, just with a new brand and quart bottle.

This oil has been around 50-plus years for good reason. A multi-generational lubricant, PennGrade 1® stands for a long and continued history of pride, passion and protection.

Appreciate the detailed answer. I assume it's a high zinc oil also?
 
I have run VR-1 conventional 10-30 for years with no problem. Stock up when it's on sale.
 
I attended 2 different Kendall sponsored presentations on the benefits of Pennsylvania sourced crude oil. As I recall they explained the PA oil had a larger molecule, so it provided a superior load carrying to TX crude. That was before Mideast oils were imported and I (of course) was hooked on Kendall until I could not find it any longer. Using Brad Penn now, with Castrol oils for my late model vehicles.

Imo, it kinda depends how fresh or tired it is.
Fresh? 10-30 or 10-40.
Tired? 20-50
Pick an oil with added zinc, if you have a fresh flat tappet cam
Tired, well broke-in old cam might not need the zinc.
