I plan on temporarily hooking up an electric fuel pump I have for some tests. Wonder if anyone has experience and knows, can I just unhook the lines from the mechanical and run the car with it still installed or will it screw the pump up running dry?

I've never broke one doing that .
It's still getting oil/lube from the motor it's just not sucking orpushing anything out .
I'd be wary of crap getting in it . But if your just doing test (not driving it you should be 100% ok

If you're gonna drive it, I'd hook the suction and discharge ports together with a jumper hose to keep the dirt/water out. Other than that, you'll be fine.
