I have never liked winged cars. Back in the day the Plymouth dealer in our small town had one forced on him by the factory sales rep because they couldn't get dealers to take the sales bank cars and no one was buying them. They basically told the dealer he would be held hostage for 383 RRs availability, which he sold a lot of, if he didn't take one.
He sold it to a local kid and all of his buddies used to make fun of the car relentlously. One night he came out of the movie theather to find laundry hanging from the wing. He only had it about 6 months and traded it and took a hugh lose on it.
They were great for their intended NASCAR purpose but nobody wanted to drive one back in the day on the street. It is a stigma that has stuck with me and many guys from back in the day. I think it is mainly the younger guys that have driven their value up over the past 15 years or so that never experienced what I have outlined above.
About 3 years after they were new the value on good used ones jumped for a while as they were still racing them in NASCAR and the serious racers were seeking them out as replacements for destroyed cars. There were still some dealers that had new ones in their inventory.
I have a garage that was built in about 1930 that is plenty wide to have my working wood/cabinet shop, all be it small, and restore my `68 Runner simultaniously. For this I would never complain. I know that my garage is a very standard depth from front to back and it comes in at just under 20', which back in the late `60's was probably most common. Knowing how the "JUNKYARD DOG" fit in there, prior to the removal of the bumpers, grill, fenders, hood, etc. I think it safe to say that a winged car wouldn't fit!. If it did, you likely couldn't walk around it with the door closed. I now am thinking of a small nose shaped addition that would let you pull forward that extra foot and a half. I wonder if anybody out there didn't buy one new because it wouldn't fit in the garage?.
