I saw that sad video when it first appeared on YouTube and posted a comment on it that bears repeating here. That message is wear your seatbelts! That crash didn’t look bad enough to be fatal if he was wearing his seatbelt.
I cringe when I watch a lot of the MotorTrend reality shows where they go out on a test drive at the end of the episode and aren’t wearing seat belts. It sets a really bad example for viewers.
Our vintage rides have few safety features like crush zones and airbags that modern cars have, but they do have seatbelts, if not, seatbelts can easily be retrofitted to cars that don’t have them. I doubt that he’d be dead or even that badly injured if he was wearing seatbelts, and would be trying to figure out how to repair his truck now rather than being mourned.

I could not agree more.

I get preachy about seat belts, but feel conflicted when I drive my Challenger convertible. It’s got lap belts, which I always use, but no shoulder belts. If I ever run into something going much over 20 or 25 mph, my upper torso is slamming into the steering wheel and my head is going into the windshield or windshield frame. I’ll probably be a goner.
Driving that car on nice days top down is one of my favorite things to do, but the risk is something I think about when I drive it.
When was it that headrests became mandatory, was it mid ‘69 model year? No head rests, and you get rear ended by a drunk or texting soccer mom and your neck snaps like a chicken bone.
Everything has risks I guess, but still you gotta do what you can to mitigate risks whenever possible.

Headrests federally required January 1, 1969. Very early production might not have headrests, but anything Mopar thought might be on the lot after Jan 1, got headrests.

Bob was 78 years old. Wouldn't be prudent to assume anything about the accident beyond what was
reported in that video, I'd think. The impact of a near head-on collision alone would be quite traumatic
on anyone, leave alone someone pushing 80 though.

Let's not let his death be in vane. This is when we can come together and invent something to protect us. Nascar did it when Dale Earnhardt hit the wall coming to his final victory with the Hans device.

There are wearable devices with airbag tech. We could make a semi-stock seat with an airbag deployed between our knees to protect from steering wheel and the side of the back of the seat to protect the head from side glass. Or 5 point seat belt. Ricaro knows how to make safe stock looking seats and recently filed for bankruptcy in Germany.

Anyone here work at any auto/parts manufacturer?

Wouldn't it be cool if we did.

I don't know how original your vert is, but there are later model buckets in some high-end foreign car convertibles with integral shoulder belts. My diesel pickup has them too, but way too big for a challenger.

Thats a great idea but some guys wouldn't let a "non-correct" trim screw inside their car let alone an aftermarket seat or belt system.

I installed seat belts in mine
though the rebuild was never
approached as a correct
restoration. Since it has a
custom chassis, state regs
mandated safety items be
installed.
Sorry to hear the owner of
this trucks' passing. Their
souls were intertwined.
