Old dealership emblem, to keep or not to keep...

The new (to me) '66 Charger has still got its metal dealership emblem on the trunk lid. For phase 1 of the project, where she still looks ratty on the outside but all the drivetrain and underpinnings are sorted, I am 100% keeping it on there. That said, when it is time for phase two which involves getting the body and paint perfect, I am less certain if I would keep it on the car as it will only be able to be cleaned up so much. What would you do?

Side note, I thought about reaching out to the dealership that sold the car with some photos as I believe they are still in business. They may find it neat, or they may not give a crap haha.
 
Keep it. They look cool if cleaned up and in good condition. :thumbsup:

Since you asked I say keep it no matter what. If you restore the car just restore the dealer name plate. What's one more piece to do ? Bottom line your car your decision. Good luck with your project

They won't even be able to identify the car! However, ask them if they still have paperwork from selling it.

I would not reinstall it after repainting the car. Just keep it and frame it with picture(s) of your car.

I have an original dealer sticker for my GTX from when it was sold. In the documents book, keeping it there to preserve it. But I also have all the original dealer documents, not a typical scenario.
 
Get it cleaned up and keep it on there. It's part of the car's history, especially if that dealer is closed.

That is definitely worth a shot.

The dealership that sold my GTX from new still has all the paperwork going back to the sixties, and possibly beyond. The grandson of the salesman runs the place now....or at least he did 20 years ago.
I got copies of the original paperwork for my car then.



You can only ask.....you might get lucky.
 
My humble opinion...since you asked.
Leave it off when you go and get the body and paint all shiny new and nice. The only exception might be if it looks really cool/unique design , is a 'famous' dealership or if it is local and has some 'meaning' to you. Otherwise, clean it up and keep it with the car, but don't reinstall it.

I wish l had one on my car so l knew what dealership sold it.
 
While it's not a dealer badge, this owner issued warranty card, build letter and the original owners license plate look nice over my desk in a frame. I'd frame it and show it off. You could also frame the picture of the car, before with it and after. Makes for a feel good wall hanging.

Cool piece for sure. If I couldn't get it rechromed I would put it on a display board at least, I would have a hard time putting it on a shiny car if it wasn't looking new as well.

I've done a variation on this theme, putting a book together with my pictures from back in the day, a summary of the car's history, along with copies of all the documents (the originals are kept in my file cabinet.) Rob Clark has promised me a license plate frame from 1969, which is what was on the GTX when I first drove it. The dealership started using decals the following year. I have a similar issue to the metal dealership emblem with my car. When it was new, Bill Clark mounted a '66 Imperial hood ornament on it. I bought one 20 years ago, figuring I'd mount it if the car ever fell into my hands. Rob has been urging me to do so, but I've had overwhelmingly negative response when I've raised the issue with other Mopar folk. For now, it's hanging from the rear view mirror.

Like @eldubb440 this dealership is still in business and is local to me so I say put it back on, it's part of the history and personality. https://www.cherryhilljeep.com/ When I found out the dealership that sold Max I e-mailed them and offered to pay for the search through their records. Sadly they were dumpstered years ago. I have my late wife's '68 Toyota Corona. She had it painted 50 years ago. If or when it gets restored I'm going to have a pinstriper paint a reasonable facsimile of the dealer sticker on the trunk lid. Many years ago I asked if they still had any but they did not.
 
Keep it. The one on my Bee From Hinckley’s Dodge in Ogden fell off so I found another original. It’s part of the cars heritage.
