I'm starting to look for a different plow truck and ran across this ad. Anybody out there familiar with what these things are worth?

Great looking truck! Maybe i'll buy it. (Just kiddin)

I've seen them go for as little as $1500 and as much as $6500. My old man's best friend just got that same price for his '78. It might've had a 360.

Its fulltime 4wd, NP203 box for the transfer case. Dana 44 up front, 60 in rear. Will probably be 4:10 gears. I don't think they were still running 4:56s at that point. Standard problem areas are floors, cab corners, wheel wells, and radiator support.
Seems nice, about average price.

low miles. and the fire department may have kept it nice and clean in the winter. very good looking truck for wisconsin. price seems like a good start.

Ol number 12 seems like a pretty solid truck for the money.
I bought a 1998 2500 Ram 4 x 4 a few years ago with a 360, 130K miles, clean as a whistle, never worked, bed was like new (not replaced), club cab 4 door, for just a work truck around the property, $3,200. Have over 200K on it now. If you poke long enough you'll turn something up.

Nice truck, but the price seems high to me by about $700-$1000. More if its got rust. Then again, I just bought a 73 F250 because I couldn't find the right Dodge at (what I considered to be) a reasonable price. Cool truck tho, looks real clean. The low miles are a plus, but even so the seals, gaskets, bushings, body mounts, etc are the same age as any 77's, 10,000 or a million miles. Also beware the closed knuckle HD44 front axle or worse, the unit-bearing front ends. Parts are rare and tend to be a bit 'spensive. They may have stopped using those by 77, I'm not sure.

It's not a bad looking truck but I agree with Jonnyuma that its a bit to high on the price, I see them sell around here in that shape for around $2000 to $2500. Maybe he'll come down some.

Thanks guys. I'm trying to decide if I want something older like this (which I can repair), or something newer. I'm in no hurry as my old Jeep Wagoneer will hopefully make it through this season. His asking price seems a little high to me, maybe I'll call this weekend to see how low he will go.

Didn't Dodge market a plow specific truck with a plow installed from the factory?

Plow Commander?

That'd be neat.

Did you try the FTO forum?

I bet a fire truck had borderline **** regular maintenance, and was kept indoors!
Might be worth the extra couple hundred.

Information on the Snow Commander. Personally, I'd stay away from a truck that had plowed its whole life.
As for the one here, a lock out Dana 44 would go for around $400 around here, and a 60 goes for about $600-900. A np205 box and transmission connection goes for $250-500. Then, its part time 4x4, a little easier on wear and tear, plus you get rid of the np203, which is chain drive.

That's an open knuckle front axle. I would stay away from full time 4x4. Nothing but problems if you're going to work it hard. I had a 1975 with a 440 and was always replacing bearings and front axle u-joints. I finally converted it to part time. problem solved.

Yeah, I remember the Sno Comander. But like you said, anything that has plowed for a living is a problem. The entire drivetrain, front end, engine and tranny mounts are all to be assumed to be worthless. Not to mention a life of salt and sand.

Way too nice for a plow truck. I think for this neck of the woods its a bargain if it really is as clean and rust free as it looks. Hard to find something that vintage that isn't rotted away. Should be something around a little less pristine to put on a plow.

maybe check out www.ForTrucksOnly.com prices are allover the place, depends on condition, mileage, where you live, options, 4x4 or not, clear title etc., IMHFO if it's been maintained well, then that asking price isn't too bad...

The truck may be an old military model called the M880. The Army and to a lesser extent the other branches of the services used this truck in non-tactical roles as a utility truck and when they were through with them they often sold them off to other governmental agencies such as fire departments for their needs. The listed equipment that the truck has is identical to the equipment that the Chrysler Corporation built for the military in the CUCV program (Dana 44 front axle, Dana 60 rear, NP 203 transfer case, 318 V-8, 3 speed Torqueflite automatic transmission, etc.)

I bought one of these myself (a former Forestry Service vehicle from Wisconsin) and it is a good truck. I've had it for two years now, and I have no major complaints. You might want something a bit newer though if you're going to do snow plowing. The 318 is no speed merchant and the gears are not cut for good gas mileage. And after all it is a 30 year old truck. $3200 and change is not a bad price in my opinion, but it's your call.

It's prone to electrical gremlins too and needs to have good grounds. The firewall bulkhead connector is a weak spot on that model.

If all the mechanicals and front suspension have been replaced recently I'd say it's a pretty good deal at the price and is a nice looking old truck.

I didn't even realize it was full time 4x4 until your post. See what little I know about these things? I could see this as not being ideal.

Growing up a good friend of mine bought one of these only his was auto. An Edelbrock intake, Holley 650 double pumper, Quik shift kit, Hedman headers, 6" lift kit 15x33 Monster Mudders later with gooseneck hitch. He had a heck of a farm/muddin truck. A real stout work truck it turned out to be. This one sounds like it has potential if you can agree on a fair price with the saler.

Make sure you check the bottom side, they rot just like the old cars do.I have a 91 W150 plow truck and its been a plow truck since new and it shows.I gave $1500 for mine with the plow a few years ago.
