Well, I a couple of weeks ago I was getting ready to back the rockers off, but before I did I wanted to check the lash and leak the motor down. So I rolled the motor over to TCD and checked #2 int. it was fine, then I checked # 8 exh. (UHH OHH) I had over .050 lash. so I rolled it over and leaked it.... 0... now I knew it wasn't good. That's when I looked and found metal in the lifter valley.

to make a long story short we pulled the intake and found the cam had a chuck taken out of it but that was about it.

We then took the heads off, and everything looked fine.

Well last night we pulled the short block out and put it on the stand. As I was pulling the pan off I noticed the convex dent in the oil pan... I knew we were in trouble. when I lifted the pan off it sounded like a box of rocks. and that's when I seen the carnage.

He broked #8 rod. It took the cam, crank, pistons and we have some niced gouges in the cylinder... at least that what I can see so far.

Hopefully the block can be fixed, we won't know that until we get the rods and crank out. The Crank, Rods and Pistons are junk. How the head didn't get hurt god only knows.

None of this was audiable the last time the motor was ran?

Dad was at Monster Mopar in Indy. He was in the 3rd round had the guy covered by a mile. He was about the 1000 foot mark when he heard a pop and vibration, he instantly clicked it off. He said he thought he had a tire going down when he got out of the car whe was suprised that all four were still up. so then he just assumed that the transmission broke again, they towed the car back and put it in the trailer. So the motor hasn't been fired since he clicked it off.

What the amazing thing is he was around the 1000 foot mark which means the motor was probably about 7200-7400 RPM. I can't beleive the heads are fine and it never put a hole even in the pan.

Dad was dialed in at 9.81.

If there's no crackes in the cyls.you might get lucky and just grind the gouges smooth, other wise 2 sleeves will be in order! The head is probably the cheapest part not needing replaced! Can you say new short block?Good luck!

Yep, thats why our season isn't looking to good next year.

KD Belvedere, I'm so sorry to see & hear of that carnage, that looks pretty damn bad, hopefully the block is savable at-least, good the heads didn't get hurt, how I couldn't tell ya, wow maybe rod failure or rod-bolt failure, oil starvation, who knows what, started the whole thing ??, with that kind of total carnage/destruction, you would think you would have had some kind of sign, low or erratic oil pressure, knock, exhaust noise, metal in the oil, plug gaps closed up, or something, 1st before the big bang... Good luck, I wish you the best, it looks very expensive...

Wow really sorry to see that. Ron

Budnick, Thanks; No there wasn't any indication according to dad. The car was running good at Norwalk and when he went to Indy on Friday he went 9.80 - 138.00, on Saturday 9.90 - 136.00 then on Sunday he went 9.81- 137.00, 9.84 - 137.00, he said on the last pass it was haulin the mail when he heard the pop.

I'm sure it wasn't starving for oil, it had 8.5 quarts in the pan + 1.5 in the accumulator. When we starting pulling the motor apart we checked the accumulator and it was empty which tells me that it did it's job and discharged the oil when the pressure dropped. When I drained the oil out I got about 9 quarts just out of draining the pan.

Oh well I guess we'll just start collecting parts.... God willing we'll try to make it for Beaver Springs in July. If not I guess we'll have to take the year off.

On the positive side, nothing went through the block or pan and drop 9 quarts of oil under the tires and put the car in the wall and get hurt.

Your lucky, yea kicken' a rod out the side, oiling the track & wrecken' the car, would be far worse... Good luck getten' r' done

Wow that sucks! Good thing it was all internal and not under the tires.
My engine made a strange noise at 1000 ft then started knocking. #8 (!?) rod bearing spun.
Not as bad as yours but carnage just the same.

Kev,That really blows!!I know what it's like to sit out a few seasons while scratchin' for extra $$$$$ to get it back together.
If the car don't make it to the beaver, maybe you could still come and spectate.
