Any body ever painted a distributor cap? I need a new one but it seems like the only ones I can find are gray. I have one on the Cordoba now that's Mopar blue and would like to keep it that way if I can.

The blue IS a replacement. Original Mopar were tan or black.

My engines are always blue (Petty Blue), so I prefer the blue cap. They are pretty easy to find. I believe Standard makes them as well as being available through Summit and Jegs.

I painted my tan one black to fit the engine bay a little better. Scuffed it up with red scotchbrite and sprayed it with SEM colorcoat vinyl/plastic paint. Looks great and has held up well. It's a good option if that's what you want to do.

I would be worried about arcover through any paint on a distributor cap. The paint might carbonize and then you have arc tracks on the outside of the cap, shorting the spark to one or more cylinders.

That's exactly what I was wondering. That's why I haven't painted my cap.

I know that tan is stock but the blue ones look better with a blue engine and wires. Thanks for the tip about Standard.

I was concerned about that too, which is why I haven't painted one yet.

My car isn't driving but I've had it running for a pretty decent amount of test-n-tune, still looks like I just painted it yesterday. I painted the whole thing, towers and all, just plugged the holes. It's somewhere in my buildthread if you want to check it out

I doubt you would see any problems though, I got the idea from Steve Strope at Pure Vision doing the same thing with the cap on their Charger.

X2 Mr.SpeedFreak, I painted my cap black 2 years ago with the same product and I have had no problems with arcing.

I'm not that fussy...not being demeaning...

I just dont care (right now) about the color...but, for those of you who do...
It seems as though the Blue, Black and Tan are available.

Cool!

I don't like all kinds of different colors in my engine compartment. I wanted a cap with brass contacts but it didn't come in black to match my black wires so that's why I painted it. Maybe I'm just getting old and picky. It bothers me when I see a nice car and then it has some weird colored plug wires. I guess I just lean towards a more stock look.

I was wondering about painting a cap too. I want a cap that is set up to have one bank of wires on one side of the cap and same with the other side, eliminating crossed wires at the cap for a tidy look. They are available but not in the tan color that I would prefer............................MO

It depends upon the pigment content of the paint. High voltage can be weird stuff and do weird things. If you paint one, you may want to carry a spare.
