I've read so much on pinion angles I've completely wrapped myself around an axle (pun intended) and now totally confused.
(NOTE: everything is based on the car suspension sitting level, under normal weight, flat ground, and at desired ride height)
First up... the basics: 66 Charger 685 HP, 4.1 gears, ANA ultimate tranny, GV overdrive, leaf springs.
Let's start here... My engine/transmission angle is 2.5* down. In other words, the front of the engine is pointing upwards and the tail of the tranny/GV is pointing downwards. I say this to make sure I'm clear on the actual angle because I've gotten turned around on positive verses negative, etc.
Now... based on what I've read, there are three different "recommendations"
1 - I want an equal angle on my pinion. In other words, the pinion would be "nose up" or angled up 2.5* so that the pinion and the transmission angle are parallel
2 - I want an equal and opposite angle on my pinion. In other words, the pinion would be "nose down" or angled down 2.5* creating a "V" shape. With the transmission at 2.5* and the pinion at an equal and opposite angle of 2.5, that's a total difference of 5*.
3 - I want an equal angle on my pinion less a few degrees so that under load the transmission and pinion would be parallel. For argument's sake, let's say the leaf springs wrap (rotate) 1*. So, I subtract 1* from the 2.5* pinion, making it nose up 1.5*... therefore, when I take off... the driveline would be "parallel".
Here is where I'm having the main issue. Everything I'm reading seems to be for just cruising down the road... but not under acceleration.
What I'm looking for is "What is the desired angle of the pinion in relation to the angle of the engine/tranny when 1) sitting still, and 2) under acceleration load (i.e., launching at the lights)?"
