Here's a very handy tool I made that does wonders for plug welding. I just cut up some vice grips and pinned a 1/4 thick piece of copper to the jaw. Not only does it clamp the metal tight leaving an opening to make your weld but the copper allows you to turn the amps way up with no blow threw and the copper won't stick to the weld even if you go threw. Don't know if they make something like this or not?

You improvise, overcome, you adapt! Good job!

Good job! Your thinking...

Spead a little "nozzle dip" on it to keep it nice. Some metal will become embedded in the copper over a period of time. I've used brass for a backer too.

I'll have to try that, it's getting pretty beat up after 2 resto's.

Yup. Eastwood has them and waaaay overpriced. Like yours, they do work well though.

I figured someone made them but that looks iffy on clamping force?

Glad you figured out the word "spread" from "spead"!

Clamping force is fine. They (Eastwoods) are not poorly made, as some of their tools can be. At least not the pair I picked up from them a few years ago. As always YMMV.
