A Corned Beef Sandwich Was Smuggled Into Space

Astronaut food is the stuff of science — often heavily processed to give it the chance to hold up in space, and sometimes looking less than appetizing. That’s why one astronaut packed his own sandwich and jetted off into space with it. In 1965, NASA pilot John Young hid a corned beef sandwich in his spacesuit pocket prior to the launch of the Gemini III. Nearly halfway through the five-hour flight, Young pulled out the sandwich and offered a bite to mission commander Gus Grissom, though the unfinished sandwich was stowed away after breadcrumbs began to make a mess. Young was reprimanded once back on Earth, and a congressional inquiry took place. A resin-preserved replica of the sandwich now sits at the Grissom Memorial Museum in Mitchell, Indiana.

The QWERTY keyboard was invented to slow typists down to keep from sticking typewriter keys and is about the least efficient manner of typing. But humans are stubborn and still use it to this day.

A coin flip isn't a 50/50 proposition. It's 51/49 favoring whichever side of the coin is up when it's flipped.

Some people keep a $50 or $100 behind their driver's license in their wallet for when ATM refuses their card.

I keep $100 in 20’s in the owners manuals of my vehicles. I’ve left home without a wallet a few times.

Mack's R model tractors, built from 1964 to 1989, could be broken into, and driven off in under a minute, with no damage. The vent window on the driver's door could be popped inside out with a well placed fist, and the inside door handle was within easy reach. Touching a quarter to the starter relay contacts would start the engine. I used this technique more than a few times when drivers quit without notice, and I had to recover the truck.

The trucks were popular with thieves planning to ship them overseas. With the exhaust stack removed, they would easily fit in a shipping container.

Other than that those were some tough old trucks! Man those were some work horses. Interesting how they were quick to swipe and would fit in a container.

Some of you tool wizards will know this but some might not. The shape of a screwdriver handle is designed so that you can put a socket on it for extra grip.

Never saw that before but now I have to give it a shot.
Some 42 years ago, I was shown a similar "hack" for getting out tightly installed screws. It involves a drill press, channel locks and screw driver. Use it to this day.

The Beatles didn't officially break up until 1974. Although it's common knowledge that they separated in 1970 and were inactive as a group after that, John Lennon didn't sign the official paperwork to legally dissolve the group until December 29, 1974. He did it while taking a vacation at Disneyland.
