OK....heres the situation...I took the grill out of my 68 to "restore" it. The center section is a mess with a bunch of old repairs that didnt hold together very well. I found a nice replacement center section....the problem is that was my money for the new steering box. My car drives straight as an arrow,no play at all in the steering and turns fine so there are no real issues with the box other that it leaks all the fluid out every time I fill it up. I know its the seals at least I think it is...I wanted to just replace it with a feel firm box.

I guess my question is how hard are the steering boxes to take out and rebuild/reseal? Is it worth resealing it? What parts or is there a kit I can use to rebuild it that has the seals? How many seals are there?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not super knowledgeable here, but I put a Firm Feel box in my Charger. The original was just terrible. This one is much much better. So +1 for Firm Feel. Here is an article showing how a steering box is rebuilt. Maybe you can judge for yourself from it:

I remember an article showing the Firm Feel process as well, but I can't find it at the moment. For what it's worth, I went with Level 2 and I would probably go Level 3 if I did it again...

Just an idea here if you are interested.Last week 2 my surprise I found that Autozone had rebuilt steering boxes. They had 1 for my 70 Bee for $99 with a lifetime warranty.I went ahead & purchased it but I dont plan on installing it till I finish some other stuff. So I cant tell you how it performs but they said all their boxes are rebuilt & bench tested to factory specs. I know Firm Feel is a better box but if you want to save a little doe & just want a good dependable box,it may be worth it.

thanks guys...a friend of mine has a 68 and he just put a autozone rebuilt one in his car....he love it...I think I am going to go that route so I can have some extra money to do my grill and a few other projects
