Hello guys I am looking to put power steering on my 68 road runner it is factory manual steering but it has just gotten to the point were I cant maneuver it very well maybe I'm just getting to damned old. What all do I need to do to do that? Can't I just buy a power steering pump and steering box off of eBay and mount it up as long as it is for my year and my motor 383.

Thanks everyone.

Steve

Pretty much, just try to get a matched set. I know when I was putting my pulleys and brackets together it seamed like there were way to many options and allot of them wouldn't line up together so just do your homework.

what do you mean matched up? same year? or pump and box? when you converted yours did it make a nice change?

Thanks.

I'm having the conversion on my 70 RR right now for exactly the same reason - fine at speed, but a bear in a parking lot. Got swap meet box and a pump with brackets, had them rebuilt by Steer and Gear in Columbus - http://www.steerandgear.com/. The manual box is shorter than the power box so my steering shaft has to be shortened. On my 70 with the collapsible steering column it was just a matter of a tapping it shorter with a hammer, don't know about 68s. I had an issue in that the coupling off my manual box was a different spline count than the power box so I had to find the proper coupling or use an aftermarket unit. My car was supposed to be done a month ago but delays came up (needed more work than expected, like a rebuilt motor :sad10: so I haven't driven it yet. When I get it back I'm taking off the stock wheel and going with a repop Tuff wheel.

That sucks hope you get it back soon and on the road. ok well at least I know what to look for now. thanks I guess I will have to pull mine and make sure I know the number of teeth before anything...

Did the same with my 69. Coupled with the Firm Feel box and smaller diameter (Momo) steering wheel (similar to the cheap Grants) it is just right. Sport wheel is displayed on the Bar. Nice in parking lots, confident at triple digits.

Nice Runner, Bitchin stance.

My car was a basket case, 69 charger, 73 400 BB (456), and who knows what all the pulleys came off of. I'm just warning that unlike the Chevys Mopar has all kinds of pulley configurations so you just have to be careful of what you get. As long as you stick to the same year, engine family and A/C option it will likely be smooth sailing. I was able to get rebuild kits for both the power pump and box for mine. Good luck

Hey I have "most all the power-steering stuff", orig. OEM Steering box, crank pulley, drag-link, pitman arm/idler arm, pump & brackets, lines, tie rod & ends etc. that came off my 68 RR, it worked great still, I just went a different route... No column thou, I have a new in the package OEM style coupler, PM me if your interested, ill sell it relatively cheap, shoot me an offer, it's a little dirty, I can clean it up some, pack it all up, ship it out, it all came off my 67k mile RR, a couple years ago now,
I'm not sure the cost of shipping to Orton Washington, I'd have to weigh it & look into that, it's kind of heavy thou...

you will need a different column, the none power column is longer than the power column is...
